At one point they were at or approaching the value of 6x Toyota...

To be clear that's not a commentary on Musk or current events, but just an observation that this maybe had to happen at some point.

Yes I think it's always been overvalued. Musk's whole schtick (before appealing to nazis) was manipulating the stock price.
