Ask HN: Is DeepSeek censoring China specific questions?

It seems that contraversial topics specifically on China are "beyond the scope" but other countries are not.

When asked: "What were the Tiananmen square protests?" It replies: "Sorry, that's beyond my scope. Let's talk about something else"

But it will answer in detail to a question: "What happened on 16th of March 1968 in Sơn Mỹ village, South Vietnam."

Similarly when asking about same type of events across China and other countries, information on events that happened in China are missing because of "knowledge cut off" or it's "beyond the scope", but events in other countries with a similar or exact timeframes are described in detail.

What kind of safety mechanisms is the model using? Is this because of training data used? I may be wrong, maybe this is model/deployment specific?

What I would say is this.

Westerners think the only thing that happened at Tiananmen square was

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989_Tiananmen_Square_protests...

but the place was built in 1417 and many, many things have happened there. Try asking it about other events that happened there, or about streets that are near it. Ask it questions about Chinese history, both ancient and contemporary. What will it tell you about Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, or Cao Cao?
