Amazon launches its Bedrock generative AI service in general availability (techcrunch.com)

Amazon is so late to the game. Considering just how fast things Microsoft and Google AI are being integrated in to products. They are trying to catchup now, only way is to dump $B in to some leaders. So they spent $4B on Anthropic.

Let’s see what reinvent has to offer on the catch ups.

Cloud providers typically rush these things to check boxes for meaningless Gartner reports. Hopefully, taking longer means more time was put into producing something usable and not just a nominal effort to provide LLM offerings.

Not sure it matters much as we’re still clearly in infancy - or maybe toddlerhood is the apt analogy. We’ll see though!

AWS has many products that have done well for being innovative. They also have a long list of products that were "late to the game", maybe even offer little more than being hand-wavily "managed services".

what product? AWS mostly sell services and Bedrock makes sense as an API

Given how late Apple was to the smartphone game, and how that shook out, I don't think Amazon has anything to worry about. Now, any company using AWS (there are several) can sprinkle AI magic on top of their products without a whole build out to use a different cloud. Some $B into the leaders gets them very far. It's a failing of capitalism, honestly, as it lets the incumbents rest on their laurels and they don't have to be competitive, just richer, which they should be, simply by virtue of being the incumbent.

I've been waiting for this to get API access to Claude 2. But still no pricing listed for Claude 2:

https://aws.amazon.com/bedrock/pricing/

There is pricing for Claude 2 there, because "Claude" in the "Anthropic" section refers to both Claude 2 and Claude 1.3 (don't ask me why). See https://i.imgur.com/ev5O22G.png. And yeah, it's the exact same pricing as mentioned here by taf2 (https://www-files.anthropic.com/production/images/model_pric...)

pricing is available here: https://www-files.anthropic.com/production/images/model_pric...

and linked from their main website: "see pricing" (https://www.anthropic.com/product)

Wow. I just got access to Claude v2 model in 5 mins on the AWS Bedrock service. I’ve been waiting months directly from Anthropic.

So, the software is only part of the picture. Amazon also has custom AI silicon, and I think they're already on their second or third generation here.

I think adding the software was a key component for potential success, but it's not the only thing they've got going.

Can you actually get access to Claude2 though? Or must be a giant enterprise customer?

Model 'anthropic.claude-v2' seems to be working for me on the us-east-1 region. I am a small-time customer.

All other supposedly supported regions are returning "AccessDeniedException: An error occurred (AccessDeniedException) when calling the InvokeModel operation: Your account is not authorized to invoke this API operation." I can ListFoundationModels on all supported regions, and I get a different error if I don't allow InvokeModel, so I think they are limiting availability.

No, it's not because of that, it's because you need to request access to the models per each region. So to get access to Claude 2 in another region you have to change the region in the AWS Console when you have Bedrock open, and then request the models again. Also, Claude 2 is only publicly available in us-west-2 and us-east-1 right now.

Thanks, that did it.

Yes, you can - you must fill the "Request" form for Anthropic models, but it gets instantly approved (it doesn't look like it gets checked at all) and then you can just click "Edit" and enable access to Claude (which means both 1.3 and 2) and Claude Instant.
