Shortwave | Sr. Software Engineer | Onsite in San Francisco | $150k-$225k base + generous equity

I previously cofounded Firebase (YC S11) and sold it to Google, and most of our team is ex-Google / ex-Firebase.

Shortwave (https://www.shortwave.com/) is building an AI-powered email client. We're bringing the power of LLMs & a modern messaging UX to 4.5 billion email users.

Imagine an AI virtual assistant with perfect knowledge of every message, attachment, receipt, newsletter, etc you've ever sent or received. Your AI assistant can answer questions about your email ("which candidates in my inbox have experience with Kotlin?") and act on your behalf ("Draft responses asking them to schedule a time with me").

We want the best and are willing to pay for it. We like generalists with strong CS fundamentals, app development experience, and grit. We're well-funded and backed by Union Square Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners.

Come help us build the future. Email if interested: joinourteam@shortwave.com

Unrelated to the job, but I've missed Inbox ever since it got axed. As such, your product looks really interesting.

However, given that there's no mention of it on the Security page[1], I'll assume you'll be selling my data to third parties. One thing is accepting Google looking at my mail for Google's sake, but there's a limit to who I want to share my mail with.

[1]: https://www.shortwave.com/docs/concepts/security/

Your post says

> Onsite in San Francisco

but your website states

> We're a distributed team

Are you distributed within San Francisco? :)

They used to be remote.

TestFit | C Software Developer - Procedural Generation | Full-time | Remote (CST +/- 2)

We design buildings in milliseconds. It can be hard to describe in words - I'd encourage you to get a quick glimpse of our neighborhood layout tool at https://testfit.io/release/testfit-3-07-subdivision-configur.... Our real-time automation allows real estate developers and architects to design projects in a fraction of the time required with traditional CAD software packages.

We are hiring a software engineer to join our small team and add more functionality to our procedural generation systems written in C99. If you like solving tough spatial problems using 2D vectors and geometry, managing your own memory, and optimizing algorithms to run in under a millisecond, then we might be the company for you (being prone to ranting about how much RAM Slack uses is also a good sign). At TestFit were are seeking to create a company of people who are capable, humble, and hard-working.

You can apply at https://jobs.lever.co/testfit/62bb6dfe-fd34-41c3-8cf3-5318a0....

I interviewed with TestFit last year and my opinion of this company is extremely high. The team seems great, and the strong focus on realtime performance in an industry that would certainly tolerate less almost brings a tear to my eye.

Highly recommend.

We are currently hiring for both remote employees and people who are local to Washington, D.C. Come join us in shifting government tech in the right direction -- no prior government experience required!

Apply and read about our hiring process here: https://www.usds.gov/apply

I applied and got a rejection letter saying they do not hire juniors/interns. I have 8 YOE. Maybe check your automated filters haha.

FYI for others -- from https://www.usds.gov/apply I understand that only US citizens (not even permanent residents) are considered.

Response looked a bit weaker than usual, so I was curious on the comment count on historical posts. Of course, comments can keep being added for 2 weeks before the thread is locked.

I used https://hn.algolia.com/ for quick searching.

I might point out that today is labour day in most of the world, so that might lead to fewer posts.

From having scraped HN job posts before, I’ve observed that it does take the full 2 weeks for these job postings to come in. I’d wait awhile before drawing any conclusions from today’s post.

Interesting that 2017-2019 had the most comments. I would have thought the market peaked in 2021.

Market might've peaked in 2021 salary-wise BECAUSE people were not willing to move so much? Not because of demand (more job openings), but because of restricted supply (devs were prob unwilling to move in uncertain times). Just a thought though.

Is that just top level comments (aka actual job openings) or total comments (where discussions biasing the data)

its also only the first of the month, and a holiday in many areas.

Bluesky | https://blueskyweb.xyz/ | Full-time | Engineering | Remote, overlap with PST

Bluesky is building social network protocols. Our team has decades of combined experience building distributed applications, and we’re applying it to create a federated social network where users have more control.

• Open source protocol: https://github.com/bluesky-social/atproto • Websites: https://blueskyweb.xyz/, https://atproto.com, https://bsky.app/

We’re looking for Go, Typescript, mobile, and web developers. Apply at https://blueskyweb.org/join.

Not affiliated, just wanted to pop in and say this team seems to really have caught lightning in a bottle. Their userbase is growing rapidly, they've onboarded notable public figures and Twitter power users, and it seems poised to really take over the mantle from Twitter. And the underlying protocol is really fascinating.

The team is active on the app and they are all good people who work hard and think deeply about this stuff, I'd highly recommend applying! (I'd apply myself but I'm a Python/data guy, which doesn't line up w/ advertised roles right now)

Senior Site Reliability Engineer, DevOps https://www.edf.org/jobs/sr-site-reliability-engineer-devops...

This position will help design and develop cloud infrastructure (GCP, Terraform, Kubernetes) for the satellite's mission systems, image processing pipeline, and more.

Company mission: Reducing methane emissions is the single fastest way to slow the rate of global warming today. In order to reduce emissions we first have to know where they're being emitted and who is responsible. The most effective way to do this on a global scale is from space, which is why we're launching a satellite to find when, where, and how much methane is being emitted. We are building tools to put in the hands of folks who will best be able to make the data actionable.

MethaneSAT is part of EDF, the Environmental Defense Fund.

Looks like your application endpoint is down.

I'd love to apply, email me at zach_asmith@yahoo.com

Doh, sorry about that! Looks like it's working again if you want to give it another try: https://www.edf.org/jobs/sr-site-reliability-engineer-devops...

SingleStoreDB (formerly MemSQL) (https://singlestore.com) | India | Full Time | Remote

SingleStoreDB is a database focused on high performance and hybrid workloads (HTAP). Our customers include half of the top 10 US banks, 2 of the top 3 US telcos, and 12% of the Fortune 100.

* Distributed computing and fault tolerance

* UI and User Experience

* Integrations with connectors and third-party tools (e.g., Business Intelligence tools like Tableau)

* Infrastructure that scales to dozens of thousands of database clusters across GCP, Azure and AWS

We have several positions open:

* Site Reliability Engineer (Remote — India)

* Senior Software Engineer, Database Engine (Remote — India)

* Senior Software Engineer, Managed Service (Remote — India)

Can you tell me a bit more about interview procedure? I have seen a lot of reviews on the internet that the whole process is 6+ rounds.

Those reports are simply not accurate! :)

Typically, for my team, the interview process is always under 2-3 weeks. The longest I've seen across all teams would be up to 1 month. The only times I've seen the process take a bit longer is when we have rare issues with matching candidate availability with interviewer availability.

For a typical position, you're looking at maybe 4-5 1-hour phone calls with different engineers and then maybe a 30-40 minutes call with the engineering manager for the respective team.

5-6 rounds then, seems accurate

Oh sorry I read 5-6 months. Yeah it's 5-6 calls total.

Okay. One more question, does the candidate knows that they are selected or not after all interviews conducted or they will know after each round that they are moving to the next round or not?

We typically do 1 call, then another 2 calls and then the final 3. At each phase, we let candidates know if they're moving forward or not.

Lemurian Labs | Compilers, Hardware Simulation, Generalist SW Engineering | Principal, Sr, Intern | Full-Time | Remote-first, Global

At Lemurian, we're building a hardware accelerator for AI that's dramatically different from most semiconductors humans have built to date. We're re-thinking everything, down to the level of ditching IEEE floating point in favor of our own, improved, format. All that's left to do is draw the rest of the owl. If you're looking for a truly challenging, engaging, and highly rewarding project, you've found it.

The software team at Lemurian has three major projects for the year. One is a compiler which ingests models (think GPT-N, BERT, ImageWhatever, etc) and emits assembly the rest of our stack ingests. The second project in the pipeline is to ingest that assembly in a functional simulator (fsim), which emulates the hardware target at a slightly higher level than cycle-accuracy. The third project is tangentially related to, and builds on, the first two; validate the efficacy of the entire system. Some examples might be to analyze the tradeoffs of widening of our arithmetic type (think 8-bit vs 12-bit vs 16-bit), to quantifying the pressure on the L1 bus for different layers in BERT, to the efficiency tradeoffs between tiling a matrix multiply in one way, vs another.

The team at Lemurian is absolutely phenominal. There are plenty of 25-year-plus career engineers on the team, both on the hardware and software sides. The majority of the team have come from companies like 3dfx, nVidia, Intel, AMD, Google .. you get the idea. We highly value free-thinkers, lifelong learners, and those that are fearless in the face of the unknown. We have no preconceptions about what education or background makes an ideal candidate; a good number of the team members have PhDs and are steeped in academia, and some are scrappy, self taught hackers. Everyone brings a strong desire to learn, and excel. If you're highly motivated to do challenging work, with the goal of a net-positive impact on humanity, we want to hear from you.

If you made it this far, and you'd like to get in touch, I can be contacted by email: jesse@lemurianlabs.com

City of Minneapolis | Data Engineer I | Minneapolis, MN | Full-Time | Remote or Hybrid (MN or WI candidates only)

As the largest and most vibrant city in the state, Minneapolis depends on purposeful, dedicated and innovative employees. Minneapolis has a large variety of careers for people of all experiences and backgrounds who come together for a singular purpose—serving the residents, businesses, and visitors of Minneapolis.

This position will be working on the Data + Analytics Services team, which is part of the Enterprise Data and Solutions division of IT. This position will design and maintain databases used for self-service ad hoc querying, custom applications or other production data warehouse environments for performance and reliability. The position will also contribute data engineering expertise to analytic and transparency initiatives.

Examples of projects: https://www.minneapolismn.gov/government/government-data/dat...

If you are interested, you are encouraged to apply: https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/minneapolismn/jobs/39...

I don't understand the scaling of the titles here. Data Engineer I - which indicates the lowest level in most tech jobs or any careers - requires

"Experience Six years of experience in information technology, which have included four years experience maintaining or troubleshooting enterprise datamarts and ETL Packages."

I've seen this with technical roles where you start in one job family and get promoted to another. E.g., Integration Analyst I....Integration Analyst IV -> Data Engineer I

There's also cases like Medical Doctors where the start already requires meaningful education and training.

Some titles/responsibilities aren't appropriate for someone with no experience but that doesn't make the people in those titles senior at that function.

> There's also cases like Medical Doctors where the start already requires meaningful education and training.

In this example, it's a bit different as in it is known across the industry.

@dataminded explained it pretty well, at least based on my experience. I'm not on the HR/hiring manager side of this one (technically a separate team I collaborate with), so I can only say that it does appear that it is the desired years of experience for this particular role.

Having worked for a number of years in both the private and public sectors, I can say that job titles and descriptions do not necessarily always align between the two. In other words, I understand what you're saying, and can empathize with your confusion.

If helpful, the job descriptions/classifications for all roles at the City of Minneapolis are available online:

I don't know that it will resolve the confusion entirely, but it may help to shed some light. Thank you again for the question!

Stainless | Founding Engineer | NYC ONSITE | Full-time Stainless is building the platform for high-quality, easy-to-use APIs.

Our first product is SDKs as a service – you send us your OpenAPI spec, and we generate pacakges in all the major languages and publish them to npm/pypi/etc (think `npm install your-company`). These SDKs are world-class: you get an idiomatic wrapper with autocomplete, types, etc. (I built a version of this at Stripe for their SDKs, and am now building a better version for everyone.)

Next, we want to make it easy to build amazing REST APIs. REST is simple and ubiquitous, but right now it’s also messy, chaotic, and hard to get right. We’re going to build great open-source standards and tooling that bring the benefits of GraphQL (types, field selection/expansion, standards) and gRPC (types, speed, versioning) to REST.

From there, we plan to build out a rich family of developer platform products – everything an API team would need to deliver a terrific DX to their partners and/or customers.

We’re about a year old, under 5 people, have strong revenue, and are selling to companies you interact with every day. We’re backed by Sequoia, a bunch of (ex-)Stripe people, and founders of Next.js, Prisma, and Segment.

As a founding engineer, you’ll get autonomy to build great products, skilled peers, opportunity for tremendous impact, competitive salary, and a very competitive ownership stake.

We’re looking for exceptionally productive, thoughtful, tasteful, and kind people with a passion for making software development better for everyone. Want to build the future of API tooling? Say hi: alex at stainlessapi.com

Fern Creek Software | Anywhere USA | 100% Remote | Fully Bootstrapped

Fern Creek is a software consulting company. We build stuff for other people, usually in .NET on Azure but we do other stuff occasionally. The company has been around since I started consulting independently about 22 years ago.

We also have a SaaS product in the automotive racing space that does over 7 figures annually - and that is our little side project while we consult for other clients.

The job is remote so you don't have to be in Louisville Kentucky (where we are 'located') though if you are close that is cool.

Set your own hours and all that, I want pros not people that need babysitting.

Multiple openings right now as we are growing fast...

-BI/Data Warehouse/SQL Server specialist

-Desktop dev (WPF experience required)

-Full stack Web dev (asp.net core would be great, but any tech stack experience is fine)

Live the stress free life, work from home, build some cool

> Compensation (foreign contractor): $65-$95 USD/hour

> Benefits (contractors)): a massive hourly rate that will make you weep.

Doesn't sound that massive to me. It's a low- to mid-level European hourly rate.

EDIT: To clarify, I'm talking about the gross hourly rate for contractors in Europe, not the net hourly rate for FTEs. (The latter of which is typically lower but already comes with benefits – health insurance, pension fund, unemployment insurance et cetera – included.)

I emailed them past February, and didn't heard back :( Seems a really good fit for my background. Hopefully this time they answer.

SkyGeo | Scientific Software Developer | Delft, Netherlands or REMOTE | Full Time | https://skygeo.com/

We are a young and dynamic data-driven company with the goal to measure the world. We use advanced satellite technology, InSAR, to detect the slightest movements of the earth’s surface anywhere in the world. Our in-house technologies are used across various industries from mining to civil engineering to give customers ways to monitor, alert and quantify their assets.

While we are not a start-up anymore and fully fund ourselves we still value creative problem-solving, flat hierarchies, and everybody having a voice to build the best global monitoring product possible.

Our primary language of choice is Python. Being a geospatial company, we use tools such as Rasterio, Pyproj, GeoPandas, and PyGEOS. We process large amounts of data, which means we have to be very deliberate about performance and scalability. This means we do vectorized operations using Numpy, compile with Numba where possible, and utilize lazy evaluation solutions, such as Dask provides.

Since we are dealing with complex data, a (geo-)scientific background is a plus. As a Scientific Software Developer at Skygeo, you will be operating on the interface between mathematics, geo-data analytics, and programming.

We are looking for both mid-level and senior engineers to help grow and maintain our scientific software toolchain.

If you have deployed apps to the cloud, have worked with large data sets, and value to conceptualize and build features for a growing product in a small team we would like to hear from you.

Our team is somewhat distributed around Europe, while we value office time in our HQ in Delft (where around 50% of our dev team lives), we are also open to remote work or hybrid if you can overlap with the rest of the team at core hours of 13:00 - 17:00 CET. We also meet up in Delft every quarter for a week or two to work together and explore the dutch cuisine.

Feel free to apply via above link, or send me an email at stephan.meyerzab at skygeo.com

SoftIron | Software Engineers, Systems Engineers, Solutions Architect | International | REMOTE or ONSITE | https://softiron.com/

We’re building a globally distributed, locally embedded organisation that enables our Softies to be located in the place they live and work the best. Rather than plunder the global talent pool to relocate to Silicon Valley (though you can if you want) you can be where you do your best work and participate in our global community of Softies using platforms we’ve built or customised to make that possible.

As a venture backed company we’re growing and changing fast, and in some cases you could get the chance to build or influence that growth in ways not possible in more traditional businesses. We don’t just accept the “industry norm” and constantly challenge ourselves to do things better, often working at the leading edge of where IT infrastructure and open source are heading.

Various technical roles available around the world. Apply online or DM myself with questions!

What does softiron do/make? Can't tell from your post or your website. Thanks!

We produce vertically aligned on-prem private cloud appliance. We design the hardware (motherboard, BMC, etc) and write the software (obviously integrating open source components where it makes sense eg. KVM, but also writing our own). Everything comes from a single vendor - us. The result is a cloud-like experience with no finger pointing and no shoe-horning as it was all built to work together.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll make a note to have a better less marketing-y blurb for next time.

Medic | Software Developer on the Infrastructure team | Full-time | Global/Remote | https://medic.org/

We're a non-profit organization working to provide tooling for community health projects. Our team focuses on developing the Community Health Toolkit, a suite of open-source components, but primarily an offline-first web application.

Here’s a quick list of some of the exciting aspects of our work:

- An offline-first mobile-first web app. Many healthcare workers we serve may go multiple weeks without a network connection.

- Our software must be usable on underpowered hardware, which is common for those using it. Client-side performance improvements can make a significant impact.

- We provide a platform where locally-customizable apps are built with. Backwards compatibility is critical, as is careful thought for new capabilities.

The Software Developer on the Infrastructure team will work with teammates and help us support by engineering, managing, and maintaining our hosting platform and infrastructure, allowing secure and scalable hosting. They will also be central to the future development of our services, looking for continuous improvement to the platform and supporting the rollout of new features and releases to keep our partners and us at the cutting edge of what we do.

If that all sounds like fun stuff to you, please read the full job description and apply! https://medic.pinpointhq.com/en/postings/c218f0d9-5829-41de-...

Railway | engineering, design | Remote | https://railway.app/careers

Tired of trying to beat kube into shape? Does writing YAML to ship code fill you with utter dread? Dream of a future where deploying software is simple, and you don't need an army of infrastructure engineers to build that perfect janky bash script™ to make life easy?

We're Railway, and we think infrastructure can be better. So far we've built out a platform loved by hundreds of thousands of users who simply tell us "Give me Postgres", "Deploy this repo", and we make it happen

Fair warning! The problems are complex: home-rolled hypervisors, cut-above container orchestration, over/under/whateverlay networks, virtio device drivers, edge proxies, IAM that doesn't suck, kitchen sinks - we need to build it and we're looking for likeminded individuals who think this stuff is fun.

If that sounds like you, please apply at railway.app/careers. We have a number of roles, but are prioritizing the following four roles:

+Platform Engineer - General

+Platform Engineer - Orchestration

+Support Engineer/Technical Writer

+Brand Designer

See you soon, and happy shipping.

I don't see pay range(s) listed for the open roles. Not sure how many employees you have, but at least in California, if you have 15 or more, you have to disclose a pay range in the job listing. Colorado has a similar laws. New York's takes effect in September 2023 (and applies to 4 or more employees).

Please don't make a habit of this - it's off topic in the thread and covered by the rules at the top.

Sorry, I didn't see anything at the top regarding laws that require disclosure of pay ranges. Did I miss it? Is this not relevant to the postings?

It falls under the rubric of "please don't reply to job posts to complain about something. It's off topic here."

We can't list everything that's off topic - the list would be too long to read.

I'm not saying that the issue isn't important, but it has been widely discussed in other threads and no doubt will in the future. The Who Is Hiring threads aren't for litigating ancillary issues, even important ones; they're just about who is hiring. Comments on hot topics (like pay range laws) are particularly prone to becoming repetitive.

Great point, this is also true about other states now. I've noticed generally only large multinationals are listing salary ranges online, smaller companies aren't doing that and they resist when you ask. In Colorado and Washington State you are also required supposed to do this now too.
