The United States Digital Service is a team of cross-agency federal technologists who work on some of the biggest issues affecting the American people, including: streamlining immigration, helping veterans get benefits, modernizing health care, reforming hiring, improving school safety, fixing procurement, and more. Check out our most recent impact report for examples of what you could be working on: https://www.usds.gov/resources/USDS-Impact-Report-2020.pdf

We're looking for the most empathetic, mission-driven, and tenacious technologists who are committed to untangling, rewiring, and redesigning critical government services. We hire folks from all walks of life who have demonstrable experience tackling complicated problems in the public, private, or non-profit sectors. We're hiring for:

  * Software Engineers (Frontend, Backend, Full Stack, DevOps)
  * Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) and Security Engineers
  * Product Managers
  * Data Scientists
  * Designers (Generalists, Strategists, User Researchers, Interaction Designers, Content Strategists, Design Operations, and everything in between)
  * Procurement Specialists
  * Bureaucracy Hackers
  * and more!
With regard to remote work during the pandemic, health and safety are our top priority for all employees. During this time, all new hires will start fully remote, though the expectation is they will come onsite to the DC metro area when we are able to resume normal operations. We also understand everyone’s circumstances may vary, and we will work closely with each person to make sure their transition works best for them.

Come join us in shifting government tech in the right direction -- no prior government experience required! Read more about getting hired here: https://www.usds.gov/faq

Can you comment on how likely it is to actually get a call back when applying to these roles? My experience in applying for government jobs is an application process that takes hours and having to have someone guide you to the "right" open positions and the "right" way to apply to have any chance at all to see any return on hours of your time.

edit: Am I looking at this right? There's no specific job roles, you just submit a general vague application and they call you back if they think there's an open job you'd be good at?

I left USDS in June 2021, but during my time there, there were no job roles. USDS has "communities of practice" that roughly correspond to the roles you would see at a big tech firm (e.g., software engineers join the Engineering CoP, PMs join the Product CoP, recruiters join the Talent CoP), but the expectation is that USDSers will work on a wide variety of projects that utilize their tech skills.

USDS has a streamlined hiring process that is much quicker than you see elsewhere in government. I submitted a resume, got a call back in a couple of days, did two phone interviews, then got an offer to join the Engineering CoP. The post-offer process was extremely government-y, but by that time, I was excited to join and willing to put up with a lot. After joining, I was given an opportunity to choose a project to work on. I ended up working on ~6 projects across 3 agencies during my two years there.

Thanks for feedback. I guess I'll throw my hat in the ring.

Why did you leave?

I wanted to go back into a role where I could spend most of my day coding. I would like to go back and do another 2 year term at some point, but I'd like to advance more in my IC role first.

Would you recommend it?

Absolutely! The kind of impact you can have working on government services is pretty astounding, and USDS is a great way for people with private industry bona fides to dip into civic work, complete a few projects, then return to their high paying jobs.

Hi, I work at USDS (and have worked generally on the hiring process for technologists). You're right about that for many agencies - the reasons being many and systemic, but it shouldn't apply with USDS.

You don't need a government-style resume to apply with USDS. Two sets of human eyes review your resume fairly quickly. Most often you hear back on the status of your application within 1-2 weeks. Good luck!!

MethaneSAT | Sr. DevOps/SRE | $130k - 141k, benefits | Full-Time | Remote-First | US ONLY

MethaneSAT, part of the Environmental Defense Fund, is a non-profit launching a purpose-built methane-detection satellite in 2023. In partnership with scientists at Harvard and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, our goal is to measure methane emissions with unprecedented precision and deliver actionable data to organizations around the globe with the power to curb them. Today there exists a lack of space-based methane detection, yet reducing methane is the most significant lever we have to slow climate change in the coming decades. MethaneSAT will help fill that gap.

Who we're looking for: a Senior DevOps/SRE to help design and develop cloud infrastructure (GCP, Terraform, Kubernetes) for the satellite's mission systems, image processing pipeline, and more.

Who we are: an experienced team of engineers passionate about using cutting-edge technology to help mitigate anthropogenic climate change. We're generously funded by millions of donors from around the world, which gives us the freedom to focus on our mission. MethaneSAT's data will always be published free of charge.

Apply: https://www.edf.org/jobs/senior-devops-engineer-methanesat-l...

Questions: chairfield [at] gmail [dot] com (and mention HN! also, please no recruiter emails)

TED Talk: https://www.ted.com/talks/fred_krupp_let_s_launch_a_satellit...

What is this to do that the Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation launched July 22 is not able to do? - How is EDF justifying spending money on more monitoring rather than on resolving the known emitters & problem sites?

Thank you for bringing attention to methane emission reduction itself. This gets at how MethaneSAT, and space-based monitoring in general, fits into the larger picture.

To start with the detection side of your question, there's a strong need for more space-based methane monitoring capacity. Key instruments include TROPOMI (wide-angle, moderate-precision), GHGSat (high-precision, point-source), and now EMIT (wide-angle, high-precision), and with these we're still detecting previously-unknown emission sources. Space-based detection needs to mature its capacity to the point where new emissions are rapidly detected, monitored frequently, and result in actionable data that's made available within days of measurement. MethaneSAT will help fill this need, as will the upcoming NASA/JPL Carbon Mapper constellation.

To compare MethaneSAT and EMIT, first I want to highlight that every new instrument complements the others. Our team is thrilled with EMIT's arrival, and I'm impressed by its technical capability. While similar in some regards, MethaneSAT's high-precision instrument will still have a field of view about 3x wider than EMIT's (~200km to 72km, iirc). EMIT's mission is also broader than just methane monitoring.

But it's not all about the measurements themselves. Our scientists and engineers are building a system to fully automate analysis that's historically been somewhat manual and error-prone, and to deliver more than just the standard methane concentration maps. We're on the cutting edge here, as far as I know. It's an exciting place to be.

Now for the part about using data to drive real methane emission reductions.

As monitoring capacity improves, efforts are underway to make it actionable on a global scale. This is now being led by the UNEP's International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO), launched last year. We're still in the early days, yet the investments made in the last couple years hold promise.

EDF is uniquely situated to contribute here too. We have a decades-long track record of effective engagement with government and private industry, and a well-staffed/funded advocacy arm whose job it will be to get MethaneSAT's data to decision makers in a position to reduce emissions.

Because you're right, that's what matters most.

Character | https://character.ai | Full-time | Engineering | Palo Alto, New York City

Character is an AI startup bringing to life the science-fiction dream of open-ended conversations and collaborations with computers.

We are hiring for various engineering roles, including front-end, data, infrastructure, machine learning, as well as product and operations.

Please apply through our career page https://jobs.lever.co/character with a resume and a short description of why you are interested.

MORE ABOUT US

We were on the front page of hackernews a few weeks ago.

We’re building the next generation of open-ended dialog agents with applications spanning entertainment, education, general question-answering and a long-tail of other potential applications.

This requires solving extremely ambitious technical challenges, and we are assembling a world-class team to do so. Our founding team includes AI pioneers from Google Brain and Meta Research whose research has enabled breakthroughs in natural language understanding and dialog applications such as Transformers and LaMDA.

Well, this is cool. I had a convincing conversation with a squirrel. (Aside: Forest animals might be one of the most perfect use cases for this. A squirrel wouldn't be expected to remember facts for very long, and might make stuff up.)

Obviously gaming would be a huge use case. It's not hard to imagine a forest creatures RPG type game. (Though, an actual game would need some kind of direction to the conversation. The squirrel I spoke with didn't seem to have any objectives of his own; and didn't recognize when I wanted to politely end the conversation.)

Business use cases are very exciting as well. You'd definitely need to solve the "make stuff up" problem; possibly giving the chatbot access to a restricted set of facts it knows and nothing else. I wonder if that's within the black box, though; is it even possible to separate factual statements about the world from other components of conversation?

Really curious to see what the business model is.

This seems like a really interesting application of AI! I think the multilingual chatbots are a particularly cool idea.

I sent in an application for your Front-End engineer position, listed here: https://jobs.lever.co/character/dd026485-5e19-4ece-a016-41b3...

I look forward to hearing from you!

Kevin

Keywords: photogrammetry, 3D, SLAM

>Salary range $60-250K

Surely this is a typo, or else why post a range this vague?

They list roles such as "Junior iOS Engineer" and "Head of Computer Vision": I imagine the low end applies to the former, and the high end to the latter (note that the market rates for Portugal also align with the lower bound).

Some of their job postings have tighter ranges (I only looked at two: one had no range, another had a tighter range), but the high end simply indicates that they are willing to pay for a great remote candidate regardless of the Portuguese market rates.

Ultimately, I do agree that a join of all the salary ranges for different positions is useless (you could include a janitor and CEO to make that $15k-$400k to make it even less useful).

Materialize | Senior Software Engineer - Cloud Infra, QA, Security Engineer, Senior SWE's | Full time | On-site NYC office | Remote friendly for some roles

Materialize is deployed on top of streaming message queues, like Apache Kafka, and allows users to specify arbitrary SQL views on top of their queues and query those views instantly. Stream processing software like Kafka has greatly improved the end-to-end latency of moving messages around in real time, but today there’s no good solution for making use of that data easily.

Materialize brings the user-facing simplicity of SQL views – for arbitrary SQL queries, not just a SQL-inspired minimal language – to the streaming data ecosystem.

Genpax | Engineers (full stack, frontend/backend, product, devops) | Notting Hill, London, UK | ONSITE (hybrid/flexible) | https://www.genpax.co/

Genpax is building a game-changing bacterial analysis platform. Using bioinformatics, we can help hospitals take early and effective action against outbreaks of MRSA and other pathogens. This is an opportunity to have a real-world impact on thousands of lives each year.

At Genpax our goal is to radically increase the utility, scalability, and speed with which whole genome sequencing (WGS) data delivers infection control solutions for human and animal healthcare worldwide. This will enable proactive control at early stages of outbreaks, and to respond appropriately to more dangerous or more antibiotic resistant strains. We have developed unique solutions to address the challenges and our goal is to provide access to these solutions in a fully scalable system.

I wrote a neat solution to the 3rd Q in the coding challenge. Except I brainfarted and skimmed a StackOverflow answer that made me think `dict.update` added dict values together and not replaced them. Realized it too late, immediately after I submitted...

Overall a pretty cool, compilers-esque coding challenge! Way better than the Leetcode stuff - gives me a pretty positive impression of the company. Hope I can apply again soon.

Grit | Senior/Staff Software Engineers | New York, San Francisco, or Remote | Full-time | $150–250k + equity

We’re building software to automatically fix technical debt. We do this by combining expressive static analysis tooling (we’ve built a developer-friendly query language for code) with machine learning to automatically migrate code to new patterns and platforms. We’re still in private alpha, but have deployed thousands of successful changes for initial customers and have raised a large seed round from top investors (Founders Fund, 8VC, Abstract Ventures).

We’ve got lots of fun challenges at the intersection of machine learning and programming languages. Our stack is Scala, Rust, TypeScript, and Kubernetes. We’re hiring for both smart generalists and PL/ML experts who are interested in collaborating on problems like automatically inserting new types into codebases and using unit tests for reinforcement learning.

You’d be one of the first engineers and would have outsized impact. We work primarily async via Slack, but will be opening an office in New York or San Francisco.

Terran Robotics | Bloomington, IN | Full-time, Onsite\Hybrid

Hiring for two roles: AI/Robotics/Software Engineer and Structural/Materials Engineer

At Terran Robotics, we're building construction robots that turn dirt into extraordinary homes. We've got $6m+ in LOIs, we're building our first production unit right now and completing 2 paid projects in the spring of '23 to de-risk the tech. We aren't inventing a new material. Our walls are similar to adobe which means they are already accepted in building code and already loved by home buyers. The only reason adobe is expensive is because it's built by hand. Our robots change that.

We are looking for people who want to join our small team and get this product off the ground. Specifically, we are looking for someone who has experience with one or more of the following: computer vision/SLAM, AI, robot control, reinforcement learning. We've got our current material and structural system permitted, but are looking for someone with a structural engineering and/or material science background interested in taking it to the next level.

Still, every engineering team builds and rebuilds one piece: *authorization*, how you control who has access to what in your app. You’ve probably started with something quick 'n dirty – some IF statements and roles in a database...until you need to add more features, and more features. And inevitably you band-aid onto this system until you have to do a big refactor. Have you seen this before?

We're changing this picture and in doing so, we are creating the next $25B+ dollar market: the authorization market. We’re on a mission to create the global standard for authorization. Our vision is that in 10 years engineers will spend 1/10 the time and brainpower they spend on authorization today.

Why now?

This is a once-in-a-career opportunity to join a company at a stage late enough that the problem and solution are de-risked, but early enough that you can shape the product, company, and the market.

We are based in NYC and hiring folks remote or onsite.

Blue Dot Change | SF Bay Area (Peninsula) | Onsite when you need to be in the lab; remote otherwise | https://www.bluedotchange.com

At Blue Dot Change () we are working on removing methane (CH4 -- one of the worst greenhouse gasses) directly from the atmosphere. Our goal is to remove over 100 Mt of CH4 annually by 2024, ultimately reducing climate rise by about a third. We are an early stage startup.

Senior Mechanical Engineer (Silicon Valley): responsible for dispenser design, construction of certain lab equipment for testing and qualifying it. Our ME team will grow to half a dozen over the next 18 months as we design not just the emitter, but also materials handling, interface with shipboard operations, resupply etc, so your responsibilities can develop in any of these areas depending on your skills and interests. But the development and qualification of emissions in the lab will be your initial focus.

You will be the initial ME on this project. We are looking for someone senior who has built industrial-scale hardware in the past. Our equipment will operate in a marine environment so experience with hostile environments would be a definite plus.

Because you'll be designing, building and testing hardware, you'll need to be in our lab. You will work with our chemists, who also need to be in the lab. But on days when you don't need to be in the lab, you are welcome to work from home or elsewhere. This job will likely require occasional travel to Oakland, Hawaii, Long Beach, and later to other countries.

We can't pay FAANG rates but we can pay a reasonable salary, and if your request is outside our planned budget we'll do another survey. We believe in being transparent; trying to rip employees off is not a good strategy for a good, long term relationship. We don't list a salary here because we don't know your experience & seniority, but we are happy to share our budget and other details with any serious candidate so you can see how we think and have the same info we have. I've been hiring people for over 30 years and have built effective teams whom I'm still in contact with. So it'll be pretty easy for you to check us out.

There are a couple of other jobs on our web site which are unlikely to be right for HN (Chemist/Chemical Engineer and Marketing Communications) but if you have friends who would be interested, let them or us know.

HRL Laboratories - Quantum Software | Software Engineer | Malibu, CA, USA | Intern, Full-time | https://quantum.hrl.com/

HRL Labs builds quantum computers. A lot of software is needed for this:

- Data platform and internal tools, written in Python. (Junior to senior)

- Optimizing quantum compilers, written in Common Lisp. (Senior)

- Experimental physics software, written in Python. (Mid to senior)

- Low-level control software, written in C++. (Senior)

- ...and more.

Most positions don't actually require any knowledge of quantum, but for some roles, it does help to have some experience working in an academic discipline.

Interview process: phone call, take-home coding exercise, video interview, reference checks, offer. No LeetCode or puzzles.

HRL Laboratories is financially stable, and perhaps the closest one can get to a "Bell Labs" experience and incentive structure. We don't build product in the traditional sense, so our incentives are aligned to doing things methodically and correctly. Out-of-the-box thinking is standard practice, and welcomed.

Only US Citizens who are able to move to the Los Angeles area are eligible. We do combined in-office (more like in-laboratory) and WFH.

Email is in bio if you want more details or want to apply through the side-door. Front-door is here: https://quantum.hrl.com/careers/

"Only US Citizens who are able to move to the Los Angeles area are eligible."

Not smart to advertise a job for US citizens only. You can't discriminate a broader class of people for employment even for national security positions.

Here is the actual statement from your company's website:

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "U.S. Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. "U.S. Person" includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

More information can be found in 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(2)(C). [1]

Achronix | Santa Clara CA, Bangalore, Remote | Remote OK | https://www.achronix.com/ | Full time

We're a high performance FPGA startup of about 200 people. We compete directly with Xilinx and Altera with our Speedster FPGA products and we also sell FPGA fabric as an IP. Managing SMS deliverability takes a lot of manual effort to measure, understand, and improve - we believe that it shouldn't. Our goal is to automate the process of knowing when a deliverability problem is happening, understanding the cause, recommending actions to resolve the problem, and communicating the solution to the end customer.

To do this, we're analyzing terabytes of SMS data and extracting actionable insights that we can build into our product. We're looking for product-minded full stack software engineers to help us build a world class product while navigating the hurdles of scaling a high availability solution. We should get in touch if building a modern, user-friendly, near real-time software system on top of a large and rapidly growing dataset within a well-funded seed stage startup is interesting to you.

We're using primarily Rust, Python, and TypeScript + Angular, along with a whole host of other tools.

Email me at cody@textvolt.com for more info

So you optimize text spamming?

That’s a fair question—we’re not in the business of enabling SMS spam, and we have a strict anti-spam policy that we enforce. Some of the use cases that we want to help with delivery are SMS 2FA, alert messaging, account notifications, customer care, etc. Everyone who sends SMS, including large, trusted brands, struggles with deliverability at a certain scale.

Spot | 3D Framework Engineer | Seattle, WA (US-remote encouraged) | spotvirtual.com

Help build your ideal remote working experience and join our mission to make online interactions more meaningful. At Spot, we are building team chat 2.0: a streamlined work experience inside the browser that combines the efficiencies and utility of tools like slack and zoom with the cultural and human elements of a spatial experience. If you are interested in game dev, this is probably the closest thing that comes with a web dev salary. Our team is small, but experienced, and this would be a ground-level role that would provide an opportunity to help shape the technology and company in a really foundational way. Our founders are experienced and most recently founded a Seattle startup that has achieved unicorn status and we have raised a seed round from top-tier investors.

The current stack is Typescript, Babylon.js, React, Apollo/GraphQL, and Nest.js. Everything is built on top of AWS using modern tooling and automation (e.g. pushing a commit will trigger a deployment). We are looking for someone who loves to build frameworks. We currently have a custom framework built on top of Babylon.js and we are looking for someone to help evolve this as well as plan for the future to push the limits of what is possible on the web. This position will be remote, but the ideal candidate will be one who enjoys/misses many aspects of a physical workplace.

Fynn (YC S19) | Fullstack Engineer / Data Scientist | Remote OK | NYC/Dallas/Minnesota

We help finance students through trade & vocational school, to pursue in-demand careers like electricians, nurses, welders, or pharmacists. Trade school in the US is an amazing opportunity for people to move from poverty towards a stable income, but the students that would benefit most are the ones that struggle most with paying for tuition. Traditional credit underwriting doesn't work well for students right out of high school or with weak credit history.

We underwrite students based on their future potential instead of their credit history, and we have built a more student-friendly, federally compliant loan as we work with our partner schools.

We're a small team of 10, based half in NYC and half remote, and went through YC in 2019. We're looking for product-minded engineers and data scientists who can move fast, write high-quality code, and love building things from scratch. Our stack is postgres/python/react.

Lean Customs | Software Engineer | Remote first (NL/EU) | Full-Time

At Lean Customs we are building better software for declaring goods to Customs. We are a self-funded startup focusing on building a good product with good people, without the pressure of investors that want to see continuous growth.

We build our product backend in Rust and take a very pragmatic approach to keep things simple. No complicated cloud setups, no distributed computing, no unnecessary glitter. A focus on a good user experience with a target of very low response times for everything.

We are looking for a (mostly) backend engineer that is comfortable in a start-up environment in a very small team. You should be able to diagnose problems and come up with solutions on your own from end to end, including some frontend or devops work when necessary. The work requires good organization and carefulness, a tiny mistake can cost a lot of money. Experience in logistics is preferred as you will need to learn a lot about the domain.

We are based in the Netherlands but it might not be an issue if you are located elsewhere in the EU.

If you are interested and want to know more, you can reach me at: dirk - leancustoms.com - Please only reach out if you are personally interested, recruiters or agencies not welcome.
