I really am not sure how to feel about this.


The article is very difficult to understand.

They just fussed two chromosomes of a mice into a longer one. The title in the scmp "fully reprogrammed genes" is just wrong.

This kind of fusion happens naturally, but usually the offspring is not fertile or has a lot of problems during the development and dies. Every few millions years one of this fusions creates a viable animal and with some good luck the offspring grows. The offspring can not reproduce with the rest of the population that has not fussed genes, so they create a new specie. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusion_gene

Unless you are a biologist working in animal evolution, or a genetist, or someone with a similar profession, this results looks pretty safe to ignore.
