Dupe of 9 other submissions: https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&qu...

This is just a tweet of some programmer dude who stood in line to meet her, and not an official death announcement. Indeed the title of this submission has been editorialized, because the tweet actually says "RIP Nichelle Nichols", as do countless other tweets.

Right? Wouldn’t it be nice if people took a moment to do some background reading on Ms Nichols and post articles that celebrate her very meaningful contributions.

How about this interview where Nichelle describes what happened after telling Gene Roddenberry that she was going to leave Star Trek after the first season to pursue theater:

https://youtu.be/bpbufLzkoBM?t=549

The whole interview is great but long.

Nice. Dr King convincing her to stay: "Where we're going is where you are. 300 years from now. It starts now." More of that, please.

Emailing HN about stuff like this will help them repair (merge) the submissions and discussions so that only one is FP, and that it’s a worthwhile one. Use a subject like “Deduping submissions for Nichelle Nichols FP” and include the the Algolia link for maximum effect.

For better or worse, "X has died" is some kind of standard on HN: https://hn.algolia.com/?q=%22has+died%22

The main issue isn't the title as such. The issue is that the title misleads about the content. The title suggests it's a death announcement, which you would expect to give details such as cause of death and a biography of the person who died, not to mention official confirmation from a reliable source. But the content is just some random person on Twitter being sad about the death, which was announced elsewhere.

But it’s such easy karma!

Longer story with more biographical detail:

Photomontage of her life (including a great photo of her and other Star Trek cast members in front of the Space Shuttle Enterprise):

Sad. Legend.
