Ask HN: Thoughts on the UFO News/Videos?

UFO hearing in front of US congress is happening tomorrow. Curious to get a temperature check on people's thoughts. Lou Elizondo & Co. have largely been uninspiring with all of their evasive descriptions of things, despite some interesting info about DoD hiding their clearances or whatever.

I would say I am less convinced of "aliens visiting Earth" now vs 2/3 years ago, but the fact that it is still in the public discourse and that the military/intelligence apparatus has to share findings/info with our elected officials is... something I guess.

Anecdotes from a nobody in Florida...

One afternoon (daylight) around the late 90s or early 2000's I was resting on the tailgate of a pickup truck, gazing at the daytime sky. I noticed what seemed a star or perhaps planet near the zenith. Intrigued, I fixated on it until I noticed two other very similar 'objects'. The formation was three points in an L-shape, with the L expanded from 90 to approximately 120 degrees. At this point I was fascinated and continued watching them for 10 minutes or so. I viewed them through a cheap pair of 8x binoculars which made no visible difference. I also watched commercial aircraft in their regular flightpath pass seemingly well beneath the 'objects'. They remained apparently stationary until I called a friend who lived within 2-3 miles, unfortunately for that particular incident, under a large canopy of live-oaks. He was unable to spot them, but quite strangely, the moment he asked if they were moving and before I replied, they began moving south. I told him they were moving and quickly ended the call. They continued south in similar formation until pausing and essentially spiraling into an equilateral triangle, then into a single point. They then re-expanded back into their original formation and began drifting east. This occurred over a period of 20-30 minutes. I phoned in to what was then a small private airport and asked to be transferred to the radar/control tower and was. I awkwardly asked if anything unusual had been observed on radar and was told in a very cordial manner that nothing had been. I doubt such efforts would have the same result these days, but I did spend significant time there as a youth.

I've remained uncertain of their nature or purpose since, but haven't stopped wondering. I've had several similar sightings since, with witnesses, but only of single 'objects'. All witnesses were of sound mind and one was an employee of the establishment where I spotted the object from. Two of the sightings were at cafes, both having suspiciously good java.

I'm not a believer nor am I a fervent skeptic. There are certainly strange things up there, but for me they remain unidentified in the true sense of the term. I definitely keep fine optics on hand though, and continue looking up as often as I can without drawing the unwanted attention of overly imaginative, silly people. Two years ago, a friend and I spotted some kind of strange operation involving a large round object with what seemed a ladder or long appendage extending from it. That one was surely human.

The problem is that we literally have as much evidence that they are ghosts as they are aliens. Unless we get new hard evidence as part of these hearings (if anything, the new found military transparency has made the Roswell/Area-51 conspiracies seem less likely), I will remain skeptical.

Especially since most of the sightings include descriptions such as "defied all the laws of physics". It seems the simplest and most obvious null hypothesis to rest on is that these videos represent hitherto unknown physical phenomenon.

I don't expect that there's going to be anything new tomorrow that changes my opinion of whether alien civilizations have made contact with Earth, or are present in our solar system.

The best UFO thing I’ve ever read was posted her a couple years ago.

Check out https://UAPTHEORY.com

It’s a long and thorough read but it’s worth it

The single novel (to me) idea I pulled out of that is the idea that distance is the inverse of entanglement.

So the hamming distance between states would also be the real world distance (in effect) That's a very interesting theory, that could go places. (No pun intended)

If this theory is correct, you might be able to modify spacetime within a superconducting container, as at least some of the electrons in them are in superposition. It's a small mass fraction, but could be a starting point. It true, there could be some basis to the plot of the movie Primer.

Also, Dimensional Engineering? Maybe you could shove an aircraft sized structure inside something the size of a phone booth... ;-)

Crap! That site was down for nearly a year and I wondered why. I'm happy to see it's up again and agree that it is one of the best reads on the subject I've found outside of printed books, eg Jacques Vallee, Stanton T Friedman, etc.

Yes i was refreshing often and I noticed it just came back up a few weeks ago

Thing with UFO is that there is very little data to research. Plus how does anyone collect sich data?

In my scifi book series, I portray the stars as being significantly far enough apart the only reasons to come to Earth are 'study' which would eliminate possibility of intervention/reveal, "going for a party and doing something dumb" which would be instant reveals but almost certainly not going to happen. or in the guise of legit travel but for the most people nobody realizes earth has gotten sentient and space capable yet. Aliens very rarely come along to check on the planet.

In that we do have alien neighbours, the closest being the Methuselah star wherein the low metal richness was because they did a metal extracting project on their star. But they care about us as much as earth cares about a common bird. They have their own business to deal with. Nobody is travelling 190 lightyears to check on the cows.

I think this aligns with what I think about UFOs. There's no farmers who are being probed by aliens and its 100% of the time the farmer who makes crop circles.

But then these US navy UFOs came along and I seriously question wtf. This isn't lying, this is instrumentation and measurements of movement our current plane technology cannot do.

Are they martians? Well we haven't gotten there.

Is it new top secret tech?

F22 last delivery was 10 years ago. The F22 isn't for export because it's certainly better vs f35 or equivalent, keeps the usa in power. The B1 and F117 aren't operational or at least have their retirement date. B2 has a replacement coming.

Seems obvious to me the US airforce has pilotless gen 6 up in the air. Stealth, tiny, and capable of far greater maneuvers than anything with a pilot in it. Could this match up with what we see in the us navy? I'm still not sure we have gotten there neither.

Flipside, could it be hostile top secret tech from an enemy? This i doubt. Typical operational range of most aircraft is short, screwing with us navy means it's us military behind it.
