It's hard. You can love and be excellent at all the things a field of study entails, but if no one wants to pay you to do those things it isn't a career.
I think encouraging people to study and enjoy these things as a hobby, and providing a solid, structured way to do that without it being a full career, would go a long way. I used to love literary criticism, but I sure as hell couldn't have made a career out of it and I don't have a super obvious path to do it as a hobby that doesn't require a bunch of self starting many people will have a hard time with.
And there's tons of people (myself included) who would love a structured way to make this a hobby and meet like-minded people without having to commit to grad school.
