> Exactly how, then, exercise aided with their weight maintenance is not yet clear, Dr. Hall said. He suspects that exercise affected people’s appetites in ways that may have made them less prone to overeating, while also burning some extra calories.

I'm a big loser (so to speak) [0] and that's been my experience. I've experimented with lots of changes on the fitness spectrum, between basically no exercise (on purpose, for weight loss) and tons of it.

You would think that exercise would always be amazing for a weight loss plan, but in many cases my charts showed that my desire to _improve my skill at the exercise_ would take over, my TDEE would ramp up, and I'd get confused and frustrated, way off track from where I thought my TDEE was, and end up effectively binging. Congrats, you exercised your way to higher weight!

So, skill development in exercise is really weird when you're dieting. Without doing a lot of analysis you can conclude you're better off sitting around eating salad.

Anyway, at a basic rate where skill development can just be skill maintenance with a little bit of development, there were lot of different beneficial effects which clearly made me less prone to overeating, from realizations like "this exercise time is great because it is not time idly spent thinking about food" to "it's easiest to visualize a healthy future me while I'm exercising." Those visualizations are like extra batteries for a weight loss routine.

At one point I was trying to measure my TDEE changes based on the ketosis-mode taste in my mouth, which did help navigate changes in TDEE somewhat.

BTW changes in BMR were very tricky to navigate during my final 50 lbs. of weight loss. There were a LOT of exercise changes around that time as well, when I realized that for the first time in my adult life I could do a pull-up. It was like I turned into a monkey. So the article was interesting to read in that way.

Low-carb diets seem to work better than plain old calory-restriction.

Seems ingested carbs are mainly used to store energy for later, while ingested fats are mainly used to produce energy now.

Proteins should not be reduced greatly, as they are required for maintaining muscle.
