There is a game like this in Ireland, often referred to in Celtic mythology, where a definitive set of rules is unknown:

The image is of Tafl as it's uncertain what a Fidchell game would have looked like but one theory is that it is similar to Tafl.

That article taught me that “checkers” is called “draughts” in British English. I wonder how Wikipedia chooses whether to refer to something by its British English name or its American English name when the two don’t agree?

I worked on a version of this long, long ago. Broke it while porting it from Chicken Scheme to Common Lisp and never doubled back to fix it. Almost makes me want to dust off my first post-college side project.
