They did what society sanctioned them doing. Society doesn't sanction those activities anymore and if you don't mind your own buisiness it will lock you up.
The times have changed and you need more than just gumption to get the resources you want.
By that argument gangs that take over a territory so they can get the resources they need/want that can't be gotten through a regular job, are the modern day pioneer
