Please don't editorialise in the headline. We're perfectly capable of judging it as idiocy for ourselves.

I upmodded because I think the topic is interesting and was hoping it might lead to some good discussion. I agree that the advocacy part is a bit distasteful, but not that the subject is inappropriate for this forum. I certainly find it more interesting than "Ruby is gawd. Is not. Is too."

Sorry Cramer, Hacker News isn't about that kind of hacking.

Why not?

Why is this on hacker news?

Because Cramer submitted it.

We could really use a down-mod button. Also vote on headlines.

There must be one somewhere, there would be no zero or negative scores. Maybe you only get it once you level up.

level ups:

25 points -- you can downmod comments

250 points -- you get to change the color on the top page

2500 points -- you can trade your karma in for cash or an epic mount

Circumcision is quite possibly the dumbest thing that our society does.

I disagree. I think it has a few benefits, but more importantly, the bar is pretty high in terms of the dumbest thing people do.

I can think of exactly one benefit. It means you can basically ignore the hygiene of your male genitalia. Beyond that, no, there are no benefits, other than permanently reducing sexual sensation by 40%. This was desired by antisex physicians in the 20th and 19th century, when it was believed to be a cure for masturbation, so circumcision caught on in the USA.

It doesn't compare to female circumcision in its most extreme form, but it is comparable to female circumcisions of just the clitoral hood.

I was referring specifically to the society of the USA when I said our society. Male circumcision isn't really popular anywhere else, except Israel. What dumber things are done in the USA today?

What dumber things are done in the USA today?

Playing lottery was the first thing that came to my mind, although this is done all over the world. This is a laundry-list question, so I'd have to ask, what kind of stupid? A low return on investment stupid? A Darwin Award stupid? A Pointy-Haired boss stupid? I actually like your question; it's pretty open-ended.
