You're right that the previous privacy policy language wasn't GDPR-compliant. It is now updated our policy to make analytics and marketing fully opt-in rather than assumed consent.
The updated policy clearly separates essential data uses (providing services, billing, support) from optional uses like marketing and analytics. These optional uses are now explicitly opt-out by default, requiring users to actively opt in through their account settings.
For me, it wasn’t about transferring a number — I just wanted a way to make cheap international calls without relying on outdated apps or needing a phone number at all. Skype used to kind of do that, but it's practically gone now. I will add the porting feature shortly. Let me know what else you think is needed
Well, for 10+ years I used Skype as my “mobile” number because it would work on computers and tablets. It wasn’t until recently that I had cell service at my house so investing in a smartphone didn’t make sense to me (I might have been the only mobile developer who didn’t have a smartphone with a plan). Traveling around upstate NY you can always count on there being WiFi at work or the gas station, at Taco Bell, at the gym or any place you might stop.
An iPhone is a lot more expensive but it is also more versatile in that I can play some of the mobile games I see fan art for in Danbooru, and unlike every other kind of non-landline, you can really leave a message…. With every cheap android phone or Skype it seemed I was always setting up my voice mailbox but whenever anyone called they’d hear “this customer hasn’t finished setting up their voice mailbox.” It’s true for all my friends who have subprime mobile or VoIP phones…. And it insidious since you probably never call yourself to know your voicemail box works.
