I applied for this position, completed a 2 hour programming exercise, and then was told that you do not hire remote (or at least remote outside of the US).

Please modify your posting to be accurate.

My apologies for that. We do hire remote outside the US (we currently have a remote employee working from São Paulo, Brazil[1]), but in your case we realized too late in the process that the time zone difference would have been too extreme for daytime collaboration.

Please accept my apologies that we did not come to this realization before sending you the programming exercise. It's too late for me to edit the parent post, but I will clarify in future postings that we're looking for remote with up to 6 hours of time zone difference from PST.

What if remote workers from other time zones are happy to work hours based on a +/- 6 hour time zone from PST? It's puzzling why there would be a specific band of time zones from which candidates are permitted to already be living, instead of a specific set of hours that you state in the job ad, asking that candidates only apply if they are OK working those particular hours.

Yes exactly. I had stated that I was willing to be available during all PST business hours before I was sent the coding exercise.

To be clear, I don't get upset if I send people my resume and I get completely ignored or if I fill out an online application and get completely ignored. That's pretty much par for the course.

I don't want to make a huge deal about it, but I feel like there is a higher standard that you need to follow when you ask people to invest a significant amount of time in a coding exercise.

Anyway, their product seems pretty good and they are one of the few startups that can legitimately say that they are trying to make the world a better place, so that's pretty cool.
