It's worth knowing the fundamentals, even if you don't use them much. The law of leaky abstractions (http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/LeakyAbstractions.htm...) means that you will occasionally bump into a situation where knowing how the underlying layer works will mean you can solve a problem that someone else can't.
