I don't think this is appropriate for HN - it's a very political topic, and a very partisan presentation. Also the 'what you're not being told' headline is very clickbaity, and wholly inaccurate if you read a decent range of media as opposed to a narrow range of sources.

I actually think the article makes a cogent argument and agree with quite a lot of it, but but I don't see how this is 'of interest to hackers' particularly, and as it's a hot news topic there are many other and better places to discuss the issues.

Conspiracy theory much? Do yourself a favour and avoid this US centred trite.

If you want to read more about ISIS and get a decent analysis, I'd recommend reading http://pando.com/2014/06/16/the-war-nerd-heres-everything-yo... .

Well, looking at the other stories on the site, I'm guessing this is coming from the same camp as RT, Zero Hedge, et. al.

As far as I'm aware, while many may disagree with the implied narrative slung across the historical data points reeled off, none of the data points themselves are out-and-out false (well, it may be hyperbolic to say the US put Saddam in power - there's only suggestive evidence that they helped him rise to become head of the Iraqi security forces, afaik) so it's refreshing to me to see something on the current Iraq crisis that is neither just jingoistic ra-ra, nor wildly inaccurate, nor a simplistic partisan opinion piece blaming opposite-flavoured domestic politicians, that still somewhat avoids the conspiracist deep-end.

Surprised they didn't mention Cy Hersh's recent reporting on Libya, Syria and Turkey, though - maybe it doesn't meet their credibility threshold ;-)

I agree on the Pando piece, and I'd also suggest http://www.emptywheel.net/2014/06/13/what-if-us-government-h... as an additional datapoint in looking at this whole sorry mess.

I don't really get the article. How does Obama benefit from continued involvement in the Middle East?
