Running "./configure && make && make install" usually results in a working installation of whatever package you are attempting to compile.

Which is it? Do the autotools "usually [result] in a working installation" or are they "constantly a thorn in [our sides]?"



Usually in that case is not enough. Developer is potentially dealing with big number of users. Even a small percentage of people having problems with build is being a very suboptimal situation.
