It doesn't sound stupid. Given we may exist in a shared CPU space which renders this universe, it would make perfect sense for implementing said universe and our awareness of it. Obfuscating the universe's rules would keep people from jacking with it to the detriment of others. It's bad enough we can screw up other's lives in here as it is. Being able to alter the universe's infrastructure at will wouldn't work out so well.
