I co-founded my company (a fashion marketplace) approximately three years ago. We got some seed money from a local incubator a couple years ago.
After two years of pretty much nothing happening (slow sales, no new hires because of no money), we managed to survive and sign a media for equity agreement with a national television.
We also contacted a few potential investors. Things got serious once they found out about the TV agreement.
Some of them kind of criticized our company name, asking if we were sure about launching a national campaign with that name. It's also been said that the name would not be good enough if we decide to target luxury brands and big spenders, but would be good for the masses.
Some others praised the name for its wittiness.
Customers like it a lot.
Both the investors and the customer really like the idea and the product.
My co-founder agrees with the investors and is willing to change the name 2-3 weeks before the first commercial airings (we'd have to postpone that if we change the name).
I'm against it. First of all, I like the name and don't think the opinion of a couple investors matters much. On the technical side, this would mean waste some money (new SSL certificate, new trademark costs, etc) and a lot of time (change the domains, move all the emails (ouch), change all the documents).
Not to mention the difficulty of finding a new name. We'd have to find a nice name, an available .com domain (we currently own a bunch of TLDs and misspells) and hope for it to be available on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram.
Plus, we'd lose all of our web presence (SEO, etc).
All in all, I believe it's foolish and would show weakness.
I prefer not to reveal the name and stay anonymous.
I understand that it's hard to answer without knowing the name, but maybe some of you found themselves in a similar situation and could provide some insight.
Thanks.
