Ask HN: Why does steam mobile app guard itself

Im installing stream mobile app and after user name and password it then asks me for a code from steam mobile app. Is valve incompetent? Why would a company have such an obvious circular flow? Is this the peak of software development?

This reminds me when Facebook asks me to review/approve my new login once I login on the new device... on the said device.

Then afterwords it give me a code to "never share with anyone". Is this more peak software development?

Then it logs me out of my computer that was logged in and then when I log in it says approve it on the mobile app but the flow is gone.

So then I go to use a code but it is not clear where the codes come from on the mobile app as it instead wants to take picture of the QR code.

Is this peak software development?
