Agreed. It's a major pain in the butt, and I wish I could just ship an int64 back and forth and not have to deal with mapping it to a calendar.

That's what happens in pgjdbc by default. In binary transfer format int64 microseconds since '2000-01-01 00:00Z' gets sent over the wire regardless off connection timezone setting.
