Well the official story IIRC is the border was more lightly manned than normal (and with more reservists than normal) because it was a national holiday.

But again does that make sense given how the Israeli elites feel about Palestinians? Just assume because it's a Jewish holiday Hamas will also take the day off?

Official? It is well known in Israel and for it's enemy that on holidays there are less people. Nothing weird or reasons to doubt it.
