On: Earth's organisms developed via evolution. What if the cosmos did, too?

I watched a talk by Lee Smolin and he seems to have a great take on how physics relates to life. That moment to moment the universe supports and runs on spontaneity and free will. I'd love to find a really good summation of his ideas.
