I am all for change yet when the change makes your tech skills feel irrelevant as it opens the field to anyone who can type I do not see a rosy employment picture. I was use to being in a field where my knowledge/skills/experience were highly sought after and in demand. Now that doesn't exist anymore but it does in other in demand fields like blue collar workers and healthcare (at least for now).
I find this popular take so very odd. For me, LLMs make my dev skills feel more relevant than ever?
I can create things in a few months that would have taken years of work by a small team to do before, for less than the cost of buying pizza.
For me it’s as wonderful as good compilers. Today reminds me of when it was no longer necessary to hand code machine language, then it was assembly that winked out in favour of strong compilers. Those skills were all superseded by higher levels of abstraction, just like coding is giving way to system engineering.
Of course if you don’t keep ascending the abstraction ladder, or your vision doesn’t accommodate the requirements of the next rung up, I guess that must feel more like an end than a beginning.
One day, I suppose, there won’t be any more rungs to reach for and we will all be truly be obsolete. At that point, we will have achieved and suffered the goal of all life, to give birth to a generation that replaces us and makes us irrelevant, I suppose. That will be, I think, both a triumph and a tragedy. A disaster if we don’t make sure it isn’t, if we lose our humanity in the becoming.
Overall I need financial stability. Today, anyone with a keyboard can do graphic design, web dev, or app creation, leaving millions of tech workers competing for fewer and fewer jobs. While my history of unique tech ideas earned attention and interest over the last 15 years, none brought steady income. Tech is no longer a viable primary career for me, so I am pivoting to healthcare for guaranteed financial stability, started school in June and already have a gig lined up for November. I will miss IT, and I will keep building AI concepts like this one I created in july (https://payplay.music) on the side, but healthcare provides the reliable paycheck I need right now and in the future.
That makes sense, I think? I’ve never been able to keep a job for more than a few months because I hate being used (employed), so I can’t say I really understand, though I sympathize. I’ve always had to make my own jobs, so I also probably don’t know what financial stability looks like, but I do understand having more than enough money to live on and managing risk.
Give me 100:1 bets at 1000:1 odds all day, every day. For me, that’s stability. And for that plan, AI is a force multiplier.
I wish you well, and as jobs go, I am sure that health care must be more fulfilling than technical work, and probably a better use of human energy.
Well and overall like all of us who aren't extremely wealthy I need a job. Healthcare provides the stability I am use to and to pay my bills. I would still love to work in tech but the stability and the high demand for our skills is dwindling (i must prepare and have access to a 2nd awesome career), especially web design and development where the Internet paradigm shifts from screens to voice.
