If the brain contains far finer, previously unknown micro-zones of organization — even within tiny nuclei — how much of neuroscience’s current “regional” model is actually too coarse to explain cognition, emotion, and disease? Are we missing critical functional units of the brain simply because we haven’t been able to see them — units that could fundamentally change how we understand behavior, consciousness, and neuropsychiatric disorders?
