Well here you are not supposed to run dishwasher or clotheswasher during night due to risk of water damage. They are supposed to be observed while operating.

I have never heard of this, and I've lived in a lot of different countries. Where are you?

Finland. This mostly comes from insurance companies. But both water and fire risks seems to exist. Even if they are somewhat rare.

A quick search tells me there's approx 1.5M households in Finland and 132M households in the US, where I am. Based on these numbers the US should have a lot more dishwasher fires (actual numbers - not per capita) if this were an issue.

I've never heard from media or insurance companies that dishwashers are a significant cause of fire. By that argument you'd have to be home to use laundry machines, too.

Water damage also can occur with laundry washers, hot water tanks, broken taps, and leaking pipes. It seems strange to single out dishwashers. These days, around the world, it seems like water damage is more likely to be from flooding from rain than faulty infrastructure.

Is there something less reliable about Finnish appliances or infrastructure than the rest of the world?

Appliances are generally fine. Most issues seem to be connections. Both water intake and sewage. Insurance companies really are the party that wants to minimise the damage. So they make extra careful recommendations. As quick reaction to water can save lot of costs.

You keep saying things like "supposed to" and "recommendation", but there's a quite large difference between a recommendation and a requirement. Which are we talking about here? An insurance company can "recommend" whatever they want but mine will pay for damages even if I'm not home when a leak or fire occurs.

Even with that, dinner at 6, bed at 10 leaves plenty of time. Or you use the speed cycle.

I just pop a $30 leak sensor by my washer. The only water damage I’ve had was a broken pipe in the walls.

Where do you find a leak sensor/alarm? I found one, 10 or 15 years ago. When I wanted one more recently, I had trouble finding one.
