While I agree that people are people, they are also consumers. And he's talking about the consumer market, not enthusiasts adding it to their own systems so in this context it makes sense.

It's degrading, because not only tech enthusiasts can use computers for creative activity, becoming producers, rather than consumers.

I'd rather call them users. Consumers doesn't sound so good.
