It really feels like government policy as directed by whatever Trump saw / got upset about on Twitter, or as Trump explains sometimes in his own words just whatever his wife said to him when he got home.
It’s not just what it feels like - it’s what it is. With the GOP-led Congress abdicating its oversight responsibilities, a core pillar of our checks and balances has collapsed. This is exactly the kind of political decay Jefferson feared when he warned against the rise of political parties. What might surprise him is how long it took us to get here.
