Presumably because they lack sufficient merit.

But their two white, male colleagues don't have to re-prove their merit. One has never even been to space, but it's the two astronauts with hundreds of days in space that need to be reconsidered.


If you look back at the crews from shuttle missions, there are people of many "colors" besides the abundance of Europeans.

Perhaps the dropped promise differs from ruling out the possibility: it's very plausible these qualified astronauts would through their own skills produce the same result as was promised.


The crew of Artemis 3 hasn't been chosen yet, and I don't think they're changing up the crew for Artemis 2. My understanding is that now the crew selection will happen in a race and gender blind way. My money is still on Jonny Kim.

The thing is they want to make the point DEI went too far. If they are finally getting to the “we ourselves have gone too far”, then they may put in a black woman to show some type of capitulation without giving up moral superiority.

That’s IF they are evolving, otherwise expect two white males.
