Off topic of strictly Pila, but coleashman is following and might have some interesting insight: What would a "modern" house electrical system look like?
I'm in a '70s house, but even new builds I get the sense unless you're putting in a powerwall at build time, they aren't very interesting; just a meter and a load center and feeds. And maybe that's the way to do it, not do anything fancy until you put in a Powerwall or whatever, because then you aren't dealing with anything that isn't specifically set up for the devices you're installing.
I keep thinking about putting in a sub panel with a generator transfer switch, and pulling some of my critical loads to it (fridge, furnace, hot water), just so I'd have the option of easily running something off even an inverter running off lead acid. And I have some thoughts of gradually bringing in some of those rack-mount batteries to do backup power and some time shifting, maybe some solar. Though the Pila seems like an interesting device, but also has the downside of: I don't have space by my fridge to put the device, unless I put it in the crawl space underneath.
You keep mentioning MIDs, and you worked on Span, so you probably have some interesting ideas in this space.
