Ask HN: How do you prepare a MacBook Pro for intensive testing in Apple Store?

I have a possible hardware problem that others have reported on the web but that is apparently hard to diagnose.

So I suspect any quick hardware test will pass.

What should I do to prepare my MacBook Pro for especially intensive testing in the Apple Store?

Create a backup and wipe the SSD before leaving with Apple.

Make sure your data is backed up. If you want to wipe it you can but Apple doesn't need access to your data or account to run diags.

Wouldn't this depend on the test?

I suspect any simple tests will pass.

Will they then ask for access to my account for more intensive testing?

Will they just wipe the SSD and install everything from scratch without needing my password?

They don't need your account. As for data loss, you accept that risk when you give them your device. If they need to wipe it they will.
