Ted Cruz recently released a database of "woke" DEI NSF awards. Exploring the data it is clear they just did a search with terms "homo" and "hetero" and "race". Some of their "woke" DEI awards include-
CRII: NETS: RUI: FUNDAMENTALS OF WIRELESS NETWORKING USING BATTERY-FREE DEVICES IN INHOMOGENEOUS ENVIRONMENTS
HETEROMOLECULAR INTERFACE DESIGN FOR BETTER MULTIFERROIC MOLECULAR SPINTRONICS
BUT ARE IMPORTANT PROBES FOR ASTRONOMY SINCE THEY CAN BE TRACED DIRECTLY BACK TO THEIR ORIGIN
From that grant's abstract:
ADDITIONALLY, THE PROJECT?S LEADER, A WOMAN SCIENTIST, IS DEDICATED TO BRIDGING THE GENDER GAP IN SCIENCE THROUGH SPECIAL CAMPS AND WORKSHOPS, EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION OF FEMALE SCIENTISTS.
The grant is labeled with "JUSTICE" & "GENDER" in Cruz's spreadsheet.
If you look at Cruz's the spreadsheet you'll see that there are DEI categories for the grants and they don't match the OP's complaints (which posits they're included for sex or race keywords).
The first one is labeled with "STATUS" & "JUSTICE" and the grant says:
THIS PROJECT ALSO INCLUDES A PLAN TO CREATE VARIOUS EDUCATIONAL AND RESEARCH EXPERIENCES FOR UNDERREPRESENTED MINORITY STUDENTS TO PROMOTE DIVERSITY IN THE WORKFORCE.
The second is labeled with "STATUS" and the grant says:
STUDENTS FROM UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS IN STEM FIELDS ARE ALSO A KEY FOCUS
The third is labeled with "JUSTICE" and the grant says:
... WILL EMBED ITS DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION PRACTICES INTO ITS EVERYDAY RESEARCH ACTIVITIES...
Literally every grant I click through has similar text in it.
Maybe every grant has a DEI component, because every grant is required to have a DEI component, or it will be desk rejected without review. But just because the grant has a DEI component doesn't mean that the actual project will have one.
Similarly, every grant comes with justifications and explanations about how the research would benefit the society. But everyone assumes that those are probably fake and only exist to satisfy politicians and administrators.
OP here. There are clearly a number of DEI related awards in the list. But lots and lots of non-DEI related awards that show up solely based on a stupid text search. e.g.
CHEMISTS HAVE A GREAT UNDERSTANDING OF THE REACTIVITY OF SMALL MOLECULES IN SOLUTION IN A HOMOGENOUS ENVIRONMENT
What text search do you think surfaced that grant?
It is labeled with STATUS & JUSTICE and says:
THIS EFFORT ALSO SUPPORTS EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES TO DIVERSIFY THE STEM WORKFORCE THROUGH AN EXCHANGE PROGRAM BETWEEN MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AND MINORITY SERVING INSTITUTIONS

THIS RESEARCH ALSO SUPPORTS EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES TO DIVERSIFY THE WORKFORCE
Literally every award I have looked at contains DEI text that roughly matches the labeled categories. I don't doubt the list was generated with the help of automated tools and isn't adequately verified, but your "text search" complaints do not seem valid.
