So, actually looking in my dead-tree kanji dictionary yielded a small table of the differences between 非…, 不…, 無…, and 未…:

  非 negative judgement
不 negation of a state or action
  無 negation of existence
未 negation of existence to date (=not yet)
so I guess "unfortunate exit" is very parallel to "emergency exit" and my previous examples were more exceptional usages.

Dayum that sounds like a helpful dict. Other reasons for picking it?

Edit: the gap seems smaller than I'd expect when one sorts them by usage?

On Dulles.. I like YC's very parallel usage of "asshole" here

(helpful notation+ seems like they hired a cyborg (ofc) to do the translation?)

( in Dulles' intended context, both parties are (usually) assholes, and here, it takes some.. cycles .. to look out for the other ones :)

The main reason for picking it was the stroke index, because I almost always had no clue about readings.

A secondary reason is that it claims to be ordered more or less by usage, so we can also see what a ca. 1980s Gakken thought of relative frequency:

  不 134
  無 227
  非 491
  未 801

You could appreciate my throwing the recent-affairs sink here :)

something like “Unitarian Universalist.” Is UUism a religion? Is it progressive? Is it woke?

He didn't go all the way to "UwUism"; it could have helped clarify that he's still offering advice to Dems
