Ask HN: What's the best AI coding assistant tool?

I think with the reasoning models, LLMs can be more useful at coding than just smarter autocomplete and search. I have not tried any yet though.

What is the best process or tool to use AI to help me code in a specific somewhat large codebase?

Probably better to be model agnostic. The more integrated in my coding setup the better (I use VSCode, mostly Typescript, work in basic Saas stuff, nothing advanced, if it matters).

Not sure anyone can say what the best is but I’ve been using Zed with local Ollama models (phi4 is good, maybe Deepseek is better now?) and it works well for me.

Windsurf <- try this first Cursor <- then this Aider <- then add this to your workflow

Use cursor and connect to sonnet 3.5
