The EU and local governments are pissing me off, with their constant mediocrity and will to control (regulate) everything. I think I'm not the only in the tech community, and broader business/entrepreneurial/independent workers.
It feels like there is a political cast constantly trying to assert its power, money and privileges, while the actual management, public services and broader results in comparison to how much the governments taxes are way below par. It feels like a mafia taking "protection" money...
I'm also European and I cannot agree more with you.
This, combined with the fact that dictators and authoritarian leaders like Orbán and Fico, are not being sanctioned to hell. EU let Orbán turn Hungary into an autocracy since 2012, and even with all the human rights violations, spying on EU officials with Pegasus spyware, allowing Chinese and Russian spies in EU soil, the EU still cannot proceed towards blocking their voting power because the stupid bureaucrats think they can get Fico and Orbán to change their mind.
We need people with the same make-do mentality as these two in the EU, but that actually defend EU principles. So they can say like "oh, you're violating the EU charter here, we've warned you several times and you're not complying. Okay. from now on all those 22 billion you would receive are not going to you anymore. You lost that money."
Take off the EU funds and these countries will very quickly fix the issues the EU pointed out. They don't help the EU with any money and probably will be like that for the next decades.
Imagine how disruptive Chat Control would be in the hands of the autocrats...
Lawmakers argue that mass surveillance will help to protect children.
yes its always initially about protecting the children. Like the UK CRB checks back in the early 2000's.
Its about protecting our children from sex offenders they said, of course people are going to agree with that, then it grew into having to have a CRB check for working at the local store because children used the store, the gardener sweeping and maintaining the gardens at the GP surgery, the Tree surgeon removing a dangerous branch in a school field, etc etc, all because children attend or go to those sites.
Then they came for the delivery drivers, the warehouse workers, supermarket staff, Airport staff etc etc. Then everyone else. Until every person has to have a CRB check (DBS) even if you dont work with or come into contact with children.
The lawmakers could in fact ban all use of internet connected devices in schools and employ real teachers to teach children. Stop schools using chromebooks and collecting data on our children.
How about parents actually taking responsibility for their own children.
Stop buying surveillance advertising devices for their children.
Do children really need to be on the internet at all.
What happened to playing. you know that wonderful tool that aids in the healthy mental and social development of our children.
It's because the law around DBS checks is fuzzy so we get creep over time as people try to cover their backsides just in case.
There is no legal obligation to have a DBS check for any jobs but employers must take steps to safeguards employees, customers, pupils, etc. So just ask for one. The only restriction is on enhanced DBS and specific questions.
Safer from what? Historically the deadliest threat to Europeans have been the "authorities", accounting for tens of millions of deaths in the 20th century, via wars, repression, persecution of minorities, etc. Not a good track record, and letting them take more and more power for themselves will not end well.
The most baffling is the fact that no news sites talk about this. EU wants to completely undermine security and privacy of every EU citizen and there's not a single beep aside from this one. There's no uproar on social media - /r/worldnews discusses at length everything but the most fundamental privacy breach is somehow missing). Nobody cares. If they get their way, this will spread quickly to other countries because EU is for some reason seen as the good guy and if they do it, we will do it too.
Please write to your representative in the EU Commission. They will ignore you or respond with a templated message full of BS explaining how mass surveillance is good for you (mime did) but at least it's a signal to them.
The fact that this story will not even reach the front page of HN is the reason EU can do whatever they want. They *correctly* assume EU citizens will just take it. Your VPN will not save you when they mandate on-device AI agent watching over everything you do.
.................(quiet part) except for the messages of the people who monitor everyone else, there motives, actual uses of data, who it goes to, who has what kind of.....?layered?feudal?.... access....with the end result that is will be used
in the ways it proports to defend against......and
of course a total denial of the inevitable Yugoslavian flavored results.
We all know of course that this data is bieng recorded, its though illegal, and therefor unuseable in general day to day, political, legal, and financial schenanigans
interestingly the US is rejecting some of the same types of controls, and perhaps rejecting feudalism
as it would amost certainly lead to a civil war in the US, Europe never quite cleaned up its feudal
class, which it is habituated to and is vulnerable to bieng sold a re-branded version.
Mafia, Feudalism, Dictatorships, are all heriditary protection rackets, which as it turns out, a large number of people are comfortable with. So, what else?, then?
