How to Hit Peak Fitness After 40 (nytimes.com)

"...we are increasingly seeing athletes, like the skier Lindsey Vonn, 40, and the climber Chris Sharma, 43, staging midlife comebacks... You can absolutely be fitter at 40 or 50 than you were at 30."

Chris Sharma is still a god but he's a less of a god now than he was at 30. To peak in your 40s it helps to have not been in the greatest shape when you were younger. There is nonetheless still a lot of fun you can have with your body.

I was actually thinking that if I make it to 70 I'll do a few psychoactive drugs like mushrooms and acid. And if I make it to 60 I should certainly do cannabis. And really I should have gotten drunk the night of the election.

Somewhat related thought ... a big part of existence is predicated, bear with me, on delayed gratification. We are constantly being asked to wait so we can get something, something more or something better. Go to school to learn to get better job, more money, more something. I thought it applied to the way religions define our universe, we always have to wait more, and the gratification part is not defined fully, there is not an exhibition of afterlife we can see with our eyes to make sure it's there. Just wait and pray it's there. Now, since religions, like it or not, are a part of everyone's life, directly or indirectly (via believers you encounter), it's easy to explain delayed gratification to everyone. Simple trap that everyone is caught in. Delay, delay, delay.

You waiting for imaginary self-years to do something may or may not be related, but don't wait.

You could do all that today and still be back at work on Monday.

why wait?

Seems more like coping in your 40s then actually being more fit.

Mid 30s and I think I'm really feeling the decline for the first time, it's alittle depressing.

Pro tip: it's easier to start now than later.

Just do it. It becomes a habit. Then second nature. Unless you are disabled or have a medical condition preventing from doing even mild sports you should totally incorporate some kind of fitness activity in your life. The sooner the better.

I've been doing some kind of sport since atleast elementary school. I never stopped being athletic. Without testosterone or steroids my peak has passed

The exercise you do now is a form.of insurance for your lifestyle into your 70s+. It can mean the difference between independent activity and mobility, and not being able to do much.

Not working out contributes to testosterone decline. Also lack of vitamin D. No reason to give up now, not when old people still run marathons. Use it or lose it.
