They are costly and expensive to enforce. If you are going up against a larger player than it might make it worthwhile. If you are thinking of selling they become a useful feature to raises the price.

Randomly patenting something that is novel is a waste. Patenting something a bigger player needs in a fight against another big player will lead to immediate riches. Trying to enforce your patent against a big player could lead to riches or years of lawsuits/costs.

The problem with patents is you tell everyone how to do it. Anyone can change how it's done slightly go get around the patent. So you probably need to submit multiple patents.

Hardware patents make a lot more sense.
