BambuLabs removing 3rd party access to its printers (reddit.com)

Having owned an X1C for just over a year, I have loved it - it was my 3rd printer - and it "just works" (99% of the time).

However - this is just the push I need to install the 3rd-party firmware (X1Plus), I was considering doing it anyways as the machine is now out of warranty - but I will never update to this "security theater" firmware. (If they wanted "real" security, they would allow proper LAN mode and have the option to remove required cloud connectivity entirely)

And - unless they change, my next printer will be a Prusa - or a Voron - or a Voron-clone (Soval?) - am done with "enshitification" of existing products that I paid a premium for, and already own.

I really hope BambuLabs doesn't go to hell before I even get a chance to get a X1C — as it provides the best quality out-the-box enclosure which I would need at home.

My first 3d printer was a Qidi and it ended up having closed firmware. I replaced the motherboard with one from microcenter for $40. Problems solved.

The enshitification of tech products has now come to 3d printing via Bambulabs decision to cut off third party integrations with their printers. This is an important story, both for 3d printing and for tech products in general.
