This concerns AU retro fitting new laws (2024) to allow warrentless 2018 taps of ANOM 'encrypted' comms in joint five eyes (AU-US-UK-..) entrapment / sting operations.

    Mr Caldicott said he was shocked at how blatant and frank the communications over the devices were, and that it indicated those using them had no idea they were not secure.

    "The more I got into it, the more it became apparent that the operation had originated in the United States with the FBI," he said.

    "They had encouraged an individual to develop the software and then promoted the production of these phones, which they rented out to a group of criminals for their various operations.

    "What really surprised me was that the FBI believed they couldn't use the intercepted messages as evidence in their own cases, because it could be considered entrapment."
