With Oct. 14, 2025 being the official end of support date for users who don’t want to move to Windows 11

an extended security update program for consumers

it’s only for a one-year period and will come at a one-off fee of $30.

So it's pointless, then.

My only exposure to Windows is at work and we use the Enterprise version which lacks most that the horrible advertising.

With that caveat, I was recently forced to upgrade to Win11. It actually went with only a couple of minor hiccups. If you can tolerate the horrible UI decisions Microsoft made, and you can put up with the advertising that I hear exists, and Win 11 supports your computer, then I see no reason to recommend against upgrading to 11.

It's not pointless - it gives you a one year extension. In that time, you can arguably wait and buy a faster computer for more-or-less the same price as buying one today.

My Windows computer is an i7-7700 series which is not compatible with Win 11 w/o hacks. I will probably convert that into a nice Linux or Proxmox system since it has 32 GB ram. I'll eventually buy a system (on sale) that ships with Win 11 Pro.

Is a one-year extension meaningful, though? People have known this date was coming for years already. If they haven't already switched (either upgraded their existing installation or purchased a new machine with Win11 installed), will one more year actually matter to more than a tiny number of people?

I doubt. My guess is that people haven't upgraded because they don't want to be using Win11. Those people can pay for one more year, but that's only one more year.
