Sweden to pay immigrants $34,000 for voluntary return home (middleeastmonitor.com)

I think this has existed for many years, what is new is that the maximum amount has been increased significantly due to push from an anti-immigration parti that the current goverment is dependent on.

Now if you sold everything you owned to come to Europe and now you live in a bad neighbourhood and can't find a job, can't even understand the language, and hate the weather but don't have the money to move back this money could be your way out of a miserable life.

But honestly, last year only one person took advantage of this offer so the anti-immigration folks are probably way off in their calculations, as per usual.

I don't have statistics but I think the number of immigrants with this criteria is small. Most of them will find some jobs even if they are being paid less and even if it is not registered. And in many cases these immigrants don't have a safe place to get back to so the incentives is no always financial in many cases.

They will help each other navigate the system and there are support groups from locals who do help. This offer assumes that people who find $32k and say yes that is like 10 years worth of salary in my home country let me get back and start a business except that it is more complicated than that.

Swede here. Talked to an Arab immigrant about this. He brought it up, and he thought it was a great idea. Will pay itself back many times over.

It's interesting how the Arab experience varies so much depending on which side of the gulf you were born in. The GCC's [0] citizens live a life that's the closest realization to UBI, while elsewhere the rest of the North African Arabs live a life of poverty and turmoil.

Up to how many times per person? Do I have to be there illegally? Does home have to be where I am from originally or can I ping pong between Sweden and Finland and collect a paycheck each time?

This sounds like a full-time job to me:)

How many people will figure out how to do this 5 times per year?

I wonder if this could not perversely incentivise migration just to cash in on the voluntary return fee.
