South Korea battles surge of deepfake pornography (theguardian.com)

I'm on the side of people who say The Fappening was a bunch of sex crimes and that nonconsensual deepfakes are too, but in 5 years phones will do this entirely on device. I really don't know who we're kidding with this stuff, cat's out of the bag.

The thing we should be concerned about is what kind of surveillance they'll have on our devices to monitor us. For now the focus is on the services running the models: journalists are all "whoa Google let me add a line of coke to this pic", but there's a short step between that and "hey that image violates SB 112, wait here for the cops".

There is so much porn on the net, why people need these godawful deepfakes?

Partly extortion/blackmail. Popular all over but doubly so in hyper-conservative SK.

Deepfakes will take the teeth out of that kind of extortion, probably within the next couple years. At this point, porn pictures of anyone can be dismissed as fake, and soon porn videos will be able to be.

No they won't. It's less time consuming to lie and threaten than it is to debunk lies. In a reactionary social setting deceptive people can rely on others saying that even if something is provably fake, it must have been inspired by a truthful event, or accusing the victim of having done it themselves to get attention etc.

Why do people care about a fake pornography leaks? How is it different from a photoshop edit with a swapped face?

In Japan, which I’d be willing to wager has a similar culture to South Korea, the emphasis is not on truth, as it is in English culture (and thus those cultures that sprang from it) but on harmony. Harmony preserves the hierarchy, and thus appearance and reputation (reputation being a form of appearance), are cultural corollaries, whereas merit would be the corresponding corollary in English culture. This is why free speech is interpreted differently even though Japan’s constitutional provision for it is based on the US’s.

It is much like the division and consequent attitudinal differences found in individuals who score differently on the Big 5’s agreeableness measure. A disagreeable person cares less about what people think, they are happy with the truth. Agreeable people, however, do care what people think, regardless of the truth of the matter.

So, someone in a society that favours reputation over merit, harmony over truth, or even someone in a society that values truth over appearance but scores highly on agreeableness (which is most women, btw, the main target of such porn) are likely to feel remarkably aggrieved by fakes involving their features.

It’s always good to take into account what the effect of things is to those who are the target and who have a very different situation or attitude.

Consistency is harmony of truth. There can be no harmony in lies.

Feel free to present your thesis to the Confucianist nations of East Asia.

Most truths don’t rhyme. A metronome is only so useful.

not condoning, just noticing that desire is interesting. getting a lot of a thing spoils us and makes us need more in terms of quantity, intensity, etc.

Yeah, but these are young individuals, who should not be dopamine depleted.

For some reason, South Korea became a country of young incels and young male Koreans have taken a hard turn into sexist conservatism. There's probably an element of them "getting back" at those evil feminist girls who wouldn't sleep with them.
