Ask HN: How difficult would it be kill golfballs?

I was walking my dog in the forest today. To one side there is a golf club with a bit of forest between me and it I could hear people at the driving range having fun.

I had recently read about an F16 crashing in Ukraine, possibly due to a Patriot rocket. (This has been strongly denied since then. ).

Still my brain returned to the general problem for anti-rocket rockets. That of being at the right area at the right time for an explosive date with an enemy missile.

As the golf balls kept flying through the air, my mind switched to golf balls.

How difficult would it be for a sniper to hit a golf ball in the air?

With some form of mechanism to keep the gun a bit quiet, it would be fun if someone shot golf balls. If the balls would actually be mostly destroyed, they would appear to just disappear.

Is that more difficult than a missile hitting another missile?

Of course a sniper is just human, so let’s mount the rifle on a Patriotish kit so the computer can do its magic.

Well perhaps we can give it 4 sniper rifles to use?

What is we instead just but some canons on it that can fire an excessive amount of bullets in a short period of time?

What are the odds of making it work? Killing golf balls.

this is actually being done with laser weapons...i also recall some anti-mosquito window frame with the same principle at work

Would be an amazing Myth Busters episode to blast golf balls with a variety of high power laser beams. I believe that the insides of a gold ball are under considerable pressure so it could explosive when zapped.

consider where the bullets that miss, and the ones that go through the target, are going.

if you wanna shoot golfers; just say so. Its OK, you're not alone.

You're not allowed to do it, mind.
