Launch HN: Arva AI (YC S24) – AI agents for instant global KYB onboarding

Hi HN! We’re Rhim and Oli, and we’re building Arva AI (https://arva-ai.com). Arva uses an AI agent to automate the manual verification that every banking/fintech does when they get a new business customer. This is called “Know Your Business” compliance (KYB for short) and it’s a royal pain.

What’s this about? When a business onboards onto a bank or fintech (i.e. applies to be a customer), a human analyst has to conduct extensive manual verification a lot of the time. This causes long onboarding times, and there are huge costs in maintaining compliance teams and in fixing mistakes—because human analysts often deviate from procedure.

I (Rhim) formerly led the FinCrime product team at Revolut Business. There were hundreds (!) of KYB analysts conducting tens of thousands of manual reviews per day! Turns out this is the same across pretty much all fintechs in all jurisdictions around the world, and it’s a problem that can now largely be solved by a combination of AI, data and business logic.

Most of the manual verification work falls into three categories: document verification (e.g. articles of incorporation); figuring out the business activities (e.g. does the business do things that are allowed); and communication with the customer (to make sure they provide the correct pieces of information).

Handling all of this for a customer is time consuming. It leads to huge compliance overheads from having a manual team, which can also often make scaling very difficult. Days of back-and-forth over email with customers creates a terrible experience, leading to drop off and hence revenue loss. In fact, in the US, slow customer onboarding costs fintechs $10B annually in lost revenue (https://resources.fenergo.com/newsroom/poor-customer-experie...)!

The interesting thing is that this domain is so highly structured and formalized that it turns out to be a good match for the current generation of AI tools.

Enter Arva AI. I'm not super familiar with KYB, so it could be that this would pass a human check as well, but I got in with a couple of mostly-blank utility bill / AOI templates and a pastebin saying 'this is the company x website, we do business y' as the official company website.

In any case this is a cool demo, and the type of thing that I expect to be mostly solved as LLMs get better. Good luck!

There's a big difference between the nature of fraudulent documents submitted to our customers today, and the ones that one might create knowing that the system is build with LLMs - we've mostly optimised for the former so far.

I'm also glad to see it took a number of attempts - security through obscurity is not something we want to rely on but the real system requires your identity and will offboard you without explanation at the first hint of misbehaviour.

We'll continue to improve our system to be more vigilant and make fewer assumptions.


Without explanation sounds like when platforms auto ban you without giving a reason or send you endless unsolvable captchas.


It is not possible to give the reason for offboarding as it may tip off fraudsters on how they can evade detection next time. This is standard across the industry.


i.e. "Security through obscurity" - which isn't a phrase with a good reputation in these parts...

I note that if you know your way around the dark web, it's relatively straightforward to find a "financial crimes advocacy" website with suggestions on evading KYC and other compliance hurdles; obviously I won't repeat them here (and I know that probably the majority of would-be bank fraudsters probably aren't into checking the darkweb for advice) so I hope there's more to it than just information-control...


It's a great point, but I'm afraid this is what the regulators enforce onto the banks/fintechs, out of our hands!


This is very interesting. It calls to mind some advice I heard someone associated with YC (maybe PG?) offer a while ago: (approximately) the best ideas right now are the ones that will become more useful rather than less as AI gets better.

I say that because although it's been about ten years since I worked at a financial institute, this task seems like it must be still barely too complex for AI alone in its present state to match human performance but perhaps within reach if we can soon expect further slight advances in consistency and attention across longer context. Does your experience line up with those suppositions? Or with the high structure/formalization you've mentioned, do you see this as an alternative to all those KYB analysts today?


Yes, I would definitely put Arva in that category.

For now, we limit the amount of decisioning that is made by an LLM and make as much of the business logic as we can concrete in code. It's mostly used to extract information from documents, crawl websites and identify specific fraud signals.


So what you're saying is that you could've done this startup a decade ago without LLMs using traditional NLP and ML techniques. Or even just with straight up procedural code, OCR and a rules engine. Especially since as you say everything you're dealing with is highly structured.

I work at a bank and everything you mentioned was solved many, many years ago. So the more interesting question then is why are fintechs still using manual techniques despite having the capability to automate it.


Not quite!

Fintechs often still have humans review docs, websites, perform web due diligence etc. Efficacy has vastly improved at these validation steps with the assistance of LLMs.

Interesting to hear that your previous bank has automated all of low/medium risk already, from what we have seen more traditional banks are far behind fintechs and are more risk averse in using new technologies. Nice to see that's not the case with all traditional banks.

Is that "efficacy" as the (customer-hostile) bank defines it, or is this more holistic interpretation that also factors in false-positives?

i.e. can you assert that things are better now for everyone, including the completely innocent people who often get caught-up in Kafkaesque KYC ("KKYC?") loops?


Yup exactly that! One of the benefits of what we're building is that fintechs/banks can now approve good customers quicker. So the innocent ones benefit greatly from Arva.

Well, that's half of it.

What about people who get disapproved because they were flagged by some automated screening? ...they end-up getting stuck in limbo because they were flagged, so they can't even (for example) close-out and withdraw any other accounts they have with the same institution - and they can't get any help because of the "we-can't-tell-you-how-to-evade-KYC" rules.

Decision making is also more accurate, human analysts often deviate from procedure. Also why banks/fintechs often spend so much on QA teams just to observe how the human analysts have performed.

Transaction monitoring is different, that's post account opening.

When people are going through an onboarding flow it is their first account!


They do use automation, OP is just straight up clueless.


Depends on the fintech! 99% don't have 100% automation for all low/medium risk.

If Revolut is handling tens of thousands of manual business reviews per day, and only 40% of applications require review, that's upwards of 10 million new businesses joining Revolut per year. Revolut does not yet have one million business customers, let alone 10 million. Are you conflating KYC with KYB?

Verifying articles of incorporation is a poor example. Verifying business incorporation is very straightforward, it does not require AI, a simple rules-based system will capture most cases because there is a single authority in every jurisdiction. Revolut's business onboarding process has direct integration with Companies House in the UK. AiPrise offers that as a product.

I do not understand where AI fits into a world driven by rules and authoritative information. The success of existing platforms demonstrates this. I hope that I am wrong and that you succeed.

Each review doesn't count as a single business entity, there are several checks within a business case which each require manual review. Plus often there is a lot of back and forth with customers, which is a multiplier.

UK is a poor example as yes indeed companies house is a central registry. In the UK the manual review is generally proving operating address and operations in general.

A good example for incorporation is Delaware in the US which has no information on the status of a company, so it could in-fact be inactive/dissolved. In this situation an additional proof of operations or good standing certificate is needed to verify the entity is active. In other jurisdictions the registry data is not even present so a certificate is needed. In most US states registries take a while to update so a brand new business would need a certificate.

AI is needed to evaluate proof documents, websites, web presence, social profiles. The list goes on.

I wish it were as easy as just using data + rules! If it were, you wouldn't have fintechs with teams of 10s or even 100s of compliance analysts doing this stuff!


I need a solution to the other side of this problem: an AI agent that will get me through the KYB process of a bank so I can open a business account.


If we fix business banking onboarding there will be no need for this!


At least where I am (in Sweden) that would require scaling back the amount of paperwork banks feel they need to “KYB”. Opening a bank account today requires about the same amount of paperwork as a loan application 20 years ago. You have to submit a business plan with a SWAT analysis. I kid you not.


That's shocking! I guess regulators haven't loosened up in Sweden. Curious how a business plan is relevant for opening a bank? (loans make sense ie feasibility/risk to repay etc.).


Would this hold up in court as actually "knowing" your customer if you let an AI handle it?


There's literally no way we would risk this process being done by anyone other than our compliance team/person.

It's a pain in the ass exactly because it's critical at a level of "oops we lost our license to do business", and part of the pain is the unending edge cases that require personal attention that any attempt to automate will immediately have to break out to a real person. So you end up keeping your headcount of the expensive people and layering another expense on top for no value.

AI agents are a screening tool to wees out interactions that would be a cost to the business rather than an opportunity ie in non-specialised situations (for example customer queries where the answer is the first question in the faq).

They are not a solution to highly specific b2b workflows, and especially not when a regulatory body will always be at couple of decades behind technology.

It is certainly a tough balance for banks/fintechs -- fear of accountability vs. a clear value add. From our interactions, using AI to automate low/medium risk is welcomed. The solution can perform in a robust way and often is more accurate and better than a human (note we're improving it all the time!).

For those that are more risk averse there is another option: the Agent can just surfaces all the relevant information and then a human has to sign-off on the last onboarding action, hence making their jobs 10 times easier.

It'll be interesting to see how AI adoption unravels in the space but it's certainly showing good signs!


Our agent implements every step of the procedure that a human compliance analyst would follow, step by step. As a result, every individual check that makes up the overall decision is documented with the reasoning and evidence the agent used.

You can also choose to bucket your customers by risk level and require manual review for higher risk customers (e.g. certain business activities like crypto or gambling, complex ownership structures or foreign UBOs). Ultimately the level of automation vs review is up to the risk appetite of the customer, as they are the one that has to answer to the regulator.


So a long way of saying "Nope" to the actual question?


Said differently: they are a data processor, not a data controller, and as such leave the legal burden on their customers, while promising some level of automation / cost reduction. It sorts of makes sense, the main challenge being profitability for Arva.


It would hold up with the regulator as each decision and outcome is stored and has explainability, so it is in fact even more auditable than a human!


Courts aren't the issue. It's regulators.

And at least at banks >99.9% of KYC/AML interactions have been automated for many decades now.

The rest are things you wouldn't want an LLM anywhere near e.g. sanctions evasion for which require significant expertise and lots of care.


Yes rightly pointed out, the regulators are the ones that crack down/fine/impose restrictions.

I'd say there are varying levels of automation, where even to this day within low/medium risk, ~30% of cases get to manual review, and with some that number can be even higher!

What’s your go-to-market? Who’s your end customer? (Buyer and/or user)

Also, what is your differentiator? What makes it difficult for existing KYC / customer verification / etc to compete in the space? In my mind, if you’ve got a kyc business that is proving AI verification solutions, they could just retrain their models on other documents to satisfy KYB, don’t mean to say it would be easy, but definitely feasible. We're predominately selling to US neobanks and fintechs, right now focussing on the smaller ones that are less tied into their existing solution.

KYB is vastly more complex than KYC because there are more things that need to be checked, and for each one a large range of acceptable proof documents. There are also many more edge cases e.g. change of business name or structure, foreign beneficial owners etc. that make an end-to-end solution tricky.

There are other players in this space but they tend to be tools to assist human analysts. We want to fully automate the low risk cases so that they never require human intervention.


Not necessarily vastly more complex because KYC has its own challenges (being accessible to end users, it is open to massive fraud rings).

But KYC is such a different problem space that few KYC companies would venture into KYB (and the other way around).


I've seen reports of skilled candidates being weeded out and unskilled ones gaming the system with this happening in the ATS space.

Legitimate candidates are rejected without ever knowing that they were filtered out and have no way of know why or how to fix it.

Aside from saving time for business customers, how do you intend to address this sort of system abuse and failure of users?

What model are you using? People that'd want to buy this wouldn't want you dumping everything to OpenAI or any other major provider.


We use Gemini as they offer stronger guarantees around not training on your data ve e.g. OpenAI. We are also looking at self-hosting open source models in the future.


Does this plug in to any KYB providers to handle exceptions?

We have AiPrise already embedded but it'd be nice to have an agent do a first pass to review exceptions that get flagged for manual review.

I'm curious why a tech-first bank like Revolut is not building something like this internally if it's such an obvious cost-saving measure? I understand why traditional banks might not (no tech culture, old processes, all the usual bla).


Traditional banks are actually a harder sell b/c they are more risk averse in terms of data leaving their servers.


Yup very true! Traditional banks are far more risk averse and generally have larger budgets for compliance. Whereas fintechs/neobanks have smaller budgets for these things as most of their capital is poured into growth.

In the case of Revolut, I'm sure they will build something similar in-house, if they haven't already since I left!

What about the ones that don't deviate from procedure. What happens to the human analysts who do a good job? Are they automated away? AI has so many applications, it seems like the automation is becoming a game, where people are on the race to automate to save only to hope that they aren't automated away themselves.

I'm all for saving time -- heck, I'm a programmer myself and have automated a lot of random stuff. But I wonder if these AI applications are going beyond the optimal amount of automation and pushing too many people out of an opportunity to contribute to society.


The compliance analysts that we have spoken too feel stretched too thin with a huge backlog of cases. We free them up from having to do menial document verification for low risk companies so they can spend more time on the more interesting high risk work.


That is just the first step -- we both know the next step is replacing them entirely, and you would if you could.


Of course they are, but automating people out of low level work frees people to do higher value things in society... Besides this concern isn't about this startup but AI in general.


That is such a myth. Only a few people are capable of higher level things in society. Not everyone can or wants to be an artist or composer.
