Ask HN: Tech Literacy Course Topics
1 point by rustybucketz30 5 months ago | hide | past | favorite | 1 comment
I am exploring making a "tech literacy" course for children, that is "career-hopeful" agnostic. Age isn't as relevant as inexperience with computers is but for simplicity's sake you could aim for a 12yo child who has taken a typing class.

I have lots of ideas but don't want to predispose anyone to topics, rather get their raw opinions on what might be covered. Feel free to share anything from just a single topic (i.e. encryption) to an itemized list.

1. Install Linux Mint. 2. Try to do everything (yes, even web browsing) through the terminal. (You can go back to browsing in a non-terminal browser later). 3. Read Kernighan and Pike's "The Unix Programming Environment". 4. Mess around with neovim/emacs. 5. You will now have an understanding of Linux as a user. Where you go from here is up to you!
