Joe Martin also wrote "Tabletop Machining", which while promoting his own line of machine tools (Sherline), is a great introduction to machining in general.

This museum is a must-see if you’re visiting SD or south LA.

I suggested we visit it, and was very surprised that my family and I spent >2 hours (kids younger than 10). For the kids, they have scavenger hunts which require some attention to complete.

It is great.
