Hi Hacker News,

I'm excited to share Paste2Download, a web app that lets you download videos from various platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Pinterest, and even 9Gag, all without watermarks.

What it does: Paste2Download simplifies the process of downloading videos by allowing you to paste a video URL from multiple platforms and download the video directly to your device. It removes watermarks and supports a wide range of video sources.

Why I built it: There are plenty of sites that can help with downloading videos from TikTok, but many of these websites are cluttered with banners and ads, making them slow and cumbersome to use. I wanted to create a tool that offers a seamless, ad-free experience. Paste2Download is designed to be super clean and fast, providing a hassle-free way to download videos.

Feedback: I’d love to get your feedback! Let me know what you think, any suggestions, or if you encounter any issues.

This reminds me of cobalt which also supports a lot more services.

If you want to try it my friend hosts an instance at https://cobalt.kanker.dev

The site looks cool man! What is cobalt actually? Is it a hosting service?

Cobalt is the open source downloader itself, the official instance is at https://cobalt.tools

With enough users, aren’t you going to be quickly throttled, unless you use one of those shady residential IP pools? (Disclaimer: on mobile now so haven’t inspected anything, but I assume the metadata fetching has to go through your server due to SOP/CORS.)

To be honest I build this for my own usage but after this post the traffic sky rocket. At the moment my server still can handle it. Maybe its a good experience for me to handle high volume traffic in the future.

Very nice, I was looking for something like this.

The only feedback I have is that on the frontpage it says "Download any tiktok video" but you support more websites than just tiktok. So maybe add that piece of information :)

>maybe add that piece of information

The faster it gets killed by YouTube

It DEFINITELY needs to mention the other services it can download from. In mobile it only says it's a TikTok downloader, which is what I assumed it was until I came here to read the comments.

From the roadmap:

> Integration with Shopee Affiliate

> Grab affiliate links and post along with the video to social media. Discover popular products to promote.

I don’t understand what this means. It sounds like advertising with extra steps.

And it seems like the user can repost videos? So you’re downloading videos, removing watermarks, and then reposting with your own ads? Surely I must be misunderstanding. Would welcome clarification.

The actual use case without this service is that. User find tiktok video, download it on their machine. User then find affiliate link. Create a social media post with video as attachments and affiliate link as a comments on the post.

So this function will automate that and user just need to paste the video link and system will do the rest including post to their social media on behalf of them.

So to confirm, the purpose of this is to download somebody else’s videos, bypassing watermarks, for people to then reupload them with their own monetization?

That’s an… interesting product, from a copyright point of view.

I'd be bothered by that premise but that is basically what most content on TikTok is.

Perhaps if it was so prevalent that it obscured all new content people might wake up to how shitty of a thing it is. (They won't.)

Sickening.

Tried with a reddit video. Failed.

Failed: Failed to fetch video info. Status: 500. {"detail":"ERROR: [Reddit] wwzuh23rky6d1: Requested format is not available. Use --list-formats for a list of available formats"}

Nice work, but like others, I have a "too good to last long" feeling.

What is the legal situation for such services? Is the provider liable in any way for how users use the service?

Honestly I build this for my personal use. I just would like to share and get some feedback for my little project. Do I need to update usage policy? I don't know man. help....

It doesn't sound like personal use, you have a Product Roadmap including

>Integration with Shopee Affiliate. Grab affiliate links and post along with the video to social media. Discover popular products to promote.

I am not a lawyer, here my 2 cents:

Usage policy won't shield you since it's your server facilitating the download and distribution (allowing the user to download) part. Unlike a tool like youtube-dl which is self hosted and the responsibility falls on the user.

I have a question. Isn't it that youtube-dl offer same features? They let user download watermark free content from tiktok? Im selfhosting the backend too

It's a community led open source project, not a hosted service.

Uh, unless you're trying to find a way to experience the legal system, I would take this down ASAP if I were you.

True. I'll consider it. Thanks for the insight!

To the author: I had a look at this (from a mobile browser) but didn’t download anything through it. Other downloaders that I have used for YouTube show the different resolutions and file sizes available and allow me to choose which one I want to download. This site only has a single download video button where I don’t really know what quality/size I’m downloading.

I hope you can look at that.

Thank you for the feedback. Will put it on feature request

I’ve never understood why websites like this exist when one can use yt-dlp locally, which will always be faster and give more control on the user.

Why install additional packages which bog down my system when I can use a webapp? What about for users of machines where they lack privileges to install packages?

27MB is bogging down your system? And yt-dlp does not need admin privileges to be installed. All it needs is Python3 which is, if not ubiquitous, excessively common.

Because most people these days only own a smartphone.

Mobile?

At least here they're removing watermarks.

Now, is this a good thing? Meh. Maybe.

It almost definitely violates some sites ToS though..

Yeah, that totally looks like instructions my mom can follow. /s

But when did your mom ever need to download videos on her device when she can access them on the internet?

My mom downloads dance tutorials to her phone/iPad all the time.

My mother downloads YouTube videos as audio to put on her offline mp3 player so she can listen to music/podcasts/lectures etc. I'm sure some people are using it to download music too. There are many use cases.

Does it bypass YouTube are restriction, which seems completely arbitrary sometimes?

Does it still work? It hasn't been updated in years.

it works. if it aint broke dont fix it!
