One of the jobs I've had was due to my employer being a consulting company that had just signed a contract with a company that wanted to use Vignette StoryServer to vastly expand their brochureware site into a full customer service system. I was hired because the consulting company didn't have anyone with StoryServer experience and I had plenty of it. During our first week of work with the client, they decided they weren't going to use StoryServer after all and after some discussion, we all decided to build the site using Java Struts and JSF. While I had Java experience, I'd never used Struts or JSF but I quickly learned them both and was productive. We finished the project ahead of time, which made the client happy and also made our consulting company happy because it got a bonus.
The only reason why I got that job was due to StoryServer experience that ended up being worthless. If they had required Java Struts and JSF experience while hiring, I wouldn't have stood a chance of even getting an interview. They accidentally hired a flexible and productive resource, which worked out great for everyone involved.
