Barra says GM will go 'where the talent is' to make software-driven cars (detroitnews.com)

As a Michigander it’s a little disheartening to see many of the companies we have outsource software jobs to other states. Industrial manufacturing jobs are becoming less prevalent and I don’t feel like we’ve developed a strong tech economy in the state.

Education system is one key. Setting up quality of life is another. If you were between 22 and 35, and you liked outdoor activities, music, cultural events, beer and cannabis, where in Michigan would you set up? I'd guess Ann Arbor or nearby but I have little experience around there. SF, Boston, Seattle, NYC and DC have hub airports, making it easy to connect to the world, so they are relatively cosmopolitan.

Tech has been moving on line, good people are all over the place.

You can't just "develop" a strong tech economy. You have to give tech workers a reason to want to move there.

Americans in general are migrating to warmer areas. Michigan is starting from behind in that regard.

What would your pitch be to get a remote tech worker to move to Michigan from a large, Southern or Western city?
